Key West Cookbook. Do not do this.

My grandmother grew up in Coral Gables in the early 1900’s. She vacationed frequently in Key West with family friends . I inherited her “Key West Cookbook” when she passed away 20 or so years go.
THESE RECIPES ARE FOR NOSTALGIA ONLY!!
Figured I would post one every few weeks. Here goes.

“Yellow Turtle Eggs”

1Lb Loggerhead turtle eggs
3tablespoons butter
Salt and pepper to taste

Remove membrane from eggs very carefully. Place in colander and wash.Salt and pepper these and allow to stand for 10 minutes. Melt butter in frying pan until it bubbles. Reduce heat to a simmer and wait.( If eggs are put in to fat which is too hot they will burst). Handle the eggs carefully, slide them into the frying pan and cook slowly for 20 minutes. Remove from skillet and serve as you would an omelet ,but do not fold over.
Serve with grits and American cheese.
These eggs can be obtained only when the Turtle Kralls are stocked, and then only rarely.

              Mrs J.M. Thompson.

Daddy said they use to eat turtle eggs raw as boys… Thanks for posting…and keeping memories of your grandma alive

I’ll pass on the eggs, But have had Hawksbill turtle steaks. Better than the best pork chop you ever ate.

PEN, we tried it best recipe i’ve had in a while, I know it may sound the most horrible thing, but have you ever tried this with imitation crab meat, my friend is allergic to crab but not fish, and he wants to try the recipe

My best friend as a kid used to eat loggerhead turtle eggs his grandmother got off of Kiawah Island when he was a kid. This was back when my mom had a key to the padlocked gate. And they used to rent Jeeps to drive on the beach.

My grandmothe was raised on Waverly at Pawleys Island and ate sea turtle eggs all of her life. I remember when I was young she would boil the eggs and poke a hole in them and squeeeze out the egg into her mouth. I tried them but didn’t like them. It was part of a low country diet when the creeks were your food pantry. Even my Dad would rather eat a mullet than any other fish, even flounder.

Growing up in Alabama my dad used to go to a fish camp up river and pick up a #1 or 2 tub full of cleane turtles which also included the white and yellow eggs when available.Grand mother would boil the white eggs and we’d tear open an end and suck themout. She’d cook the yellow eggs in somekind of gravy like sauce and we’d put that over rice. Always fried the meat and had rice and brown gravy to go with it.

Just for the record I am not raiding turtle nests on Folly Beach. Just figured I’d say that before the DNR shows up in my driveway. I guess there will be less turtles there anyway since the recent alcohol ban, I saw “Finding Nemo” those turtles looked like partiers to me.
