a buddy of mine and his adult daughter are heading to key west next week and are in need of some recommended charter captains. i have suggested they target mahi. i know this is short notice, but if any body can recommend a good captain in key west, i will be grateful.

thanks capt fritz. i ll pass this on.
If you want Tarpon/Permit, look up Pepe, great guy.
thanks dinnertime, will pass this on.
Chris Morrison is about an hour away up in Marathon but a great guide and from McLellanville I believe.
If they want to do backcountry, flats, and inshore stuff, I’d recommend the guys at DreamCatchers charters in Key West. They are as professional and knowledgable as you’re going to get. Plus the boats are top notch and in immaculate shape.
thanks rap. will pass this along as well.
Im sure there are a lot of great guides down there, but give Capt billy wickers of the Linda D V a shout. He is a local born and raised 4th gen captain in a family charter biz. They have 2 sportys and another center console for inshore tarpon/permit. He runs the linda d v himself. My folks have a time share down there and we have fished with him every year ove the past 17 years. My man puts fish on the docks even on the days when others arent. Ask any capt down there about him they know him.

I’ll tell you what not to do. Don’t book a fishing trip out of one of those “brokers” that are posted in various huts around town, no matter what they promise you. I did with the better half a couple of years ago, he said the fishing report that morning was mahi 6 miles off land promised us a nice makeup charter with 4 people max. The next day there were six of us on the boat, we trolled spoons on 2 poles for barracuda, after everyone reeled one in the mate literally fished one rod dropping a pin fish on top of wrecks to round out the trip. I basically sat there and watched the mate fish for 3 hours. He told me that the gulf stream was 30 miles out and they hadn’t caught mahi without making a long haul in weeks.
