A friend and I are driving down to Key West in a few weeks, week are trailoring his flat boat are a busy getting ready. As you know part of fun in any trip is the planning. My fear is that once we get there we our excitment will ebb in that we don’t know any “hot spots” to fish.
Can anyone recommend a good spot or two…any advice greatly appreciated.
I recommend stopping in Islemoralda in the Offshore Sportsman (bass pro shop) and picking up a Top Spot GPS map. The map gives you all the information you need to fish the KEYS. Such as hot spots to target specific fish or structures, as well as water depths. Florida is very particular about their sand bars and grass lands and they love to give out heafty fines for damaging either.
They do in fact have good spots. I have fished using it many times. Then with some experiment I found a few of my own favorites. But it is a great starting point.
My dad goes down to Islamarada a couple of times a year, I’ve been a couple of times myself. I love the fishing down there. I don’t guess you’re going to be doing much fishing offshore in a flats boat, but since “offshore” is only about 10 miles out, you probably could. If your interested let me know and I’ll try to get you some coordinates. World Wide Sportsman is an aswome store though, you should definatly stop in on the way. They even have hemmingway’s boat inside. Have fun and good fishing.
Take plenty of beer and ice to last through low tide
