My 18 year old son received dive lessons for graduation. He is doing all of his classwork and pool work here in SC at a PADI shop. We are taking a trip to the Islamorada/Tavernier area in late July and he would really like to do his Open Water dive while we are down there. I realize that internet reviews should be taken with a grain of salt but, some of the shops down there sound like they are being run by folks who are in it solely so they can dive. Can anyone recommend a good, professional dive shop in that area? I know he is 18 but he is my son and I want him to be safe.
Thanks

Someone quote me here. D has me on ignore. Bill Ferrell runs, or used to, a dive shop behind the Holiday Inn ay Key Colony. I have dove and fished with him many times over the years. Check with him. If he is retired, he should be able to point you in the right direction.

Sorry, no help from me, I’ve never done more than got tanks filled in Keys dive shop, but DF, you know the Keys and know there are many uh…unique characters down there, and 4 dive shops on every block, so I would ask around and check references for my youngun too

Exactly. I knew and trusted Bill as much as anyone down there. Having said that, everyone in the keys has a story.
I dove on the statue of the abyss about 20 years ago. We went out of key largo. I don’t remember who with. I highly recommend checking it out. One piece of advice, have gloves. The oil on your hands can kill coral. Most of the guys I met wouldn’t let you off the boat without gloves.
