Spent last week in Marathon. Had to resort to plan B when we lost an engine on the big boat heading out on day 1 (last day of lobster season). 4 of us jumped in a buddys 169 ghost, plugged in some numbers, and pounded out into the bay in 15kt winds. Managed to finally find some bugs on the 4th,5th and 6th spots and sorted thru some shorts to bag a grand total of 1 legal bug. Cannot wait for mini season.
Fished around Marathon, Indian Key Pass, & Bahia Honda. Only managed to jump 2 tarpon night fishing, at BH, but saw a huge migratory school moving in on the full moon (with lockjaw of course). Vaca Cut had a few fish hanging around at night, but they wouldn’t eat our mullet. Managed to catch a decent variety of fish over the course of the week. Mullet were easy and all over the flats. Fed the tarpon on the way out Saturday.
I was in Islamorada last week. The more I am reading, the more it seems that the fishing was sub-par last week down there. Makes me feel a little better.

Sounds like envy to me.
I got into the Dolphin on Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday of last week and caught a few Yellowtail as well on Tuesday. Wednesday was sub-par with zero current on the reef and the weather was not conducive to me going offshore. Got a 9 lb Mutton and 24 Yellowatil on Friday. There was no current anywhere on the reef that I fished yesterday but I managed a fat Mangrove Snapper and 2 keeper Dolphin right off the reef line. Today I came back with 18 Dolphin and 2 Blackfin Tuna from 700’ of water. Rolling out again early in the AM (7:30…) to find some more Dolphin.
Going to the Keys does not have to be expensive. If it was, we would not have gone. We rented a small house on a canal in Islamorada for $700 and only ate out twice. My biggest expense after the house was gas to and from…ouch. Thought about not taking my boat and renting but, at $265/day, I would have been limited to a day or two. We were able to go out everyday, whenever we wanted and overall, it was far cheaper than renting. I dream of the day I can do a Cheeca Lodge or Hawk’s Cay kind of vacation but right now, it is the Dfreedom economy vacation. The great thing is, neither my wife or sons really care because it is all about just being down there.

Thats a nice mutton. Current was nonexistant on the reef for us, which makes the yt’s nonexistant. Did you see that 690# daytime sword that came into Big Time last week? Stud fish.
DFREEDOM I agree with you. We went down to Islamaroda two years ago,
rented a decent house on the water. It’s all about spending time on
the water. Wish I could go every year.
Great video! I just got the Go Pro 2 and Sony Vegas editing software to start recording my fishing trips. Can’t wait to start putting some videos together. Good job on the editing. That takes a lot of time and patience.
