Kicking around a couple ideas

I am thinking about having my 1975 Mako 171 Angler complete refinished. There is no stringer damage and the transom seems to be good (no flex) but the boat needs a COMPLETE face lift. If this is done, I would like to cut out all the foam too. I know this is a lot of work and will cost some dollars. About 2.5 years ago I repowered the boat with an Etec 115.

Or would you just sell the hull and trailer and buy another boat that the 115 would fit on? If so, what hull and trailer can you get for around 10k? I would want a boat that is close to a bay boat as possible.

The Mako is a great boat but is just very heavy and I think it is the foam.

Bulls bay 1700 should be about that.

Ricky, how do you know there is no stringer damage? Without cutting out the deck and digging out the waterlogged foam you can’t even see them. Same with the transom. Just because you don’t see any flex doesn’t mean it’s sound. Boats made during that period used an open cell foam that absorbs water like a sponge. That water against the stringers frames and transom for 40 years almost certainly will cause rot. The only way to know is to strip it all out.

Just giving it a nice paint job is like putting lipstick on a pig and will be money wasted. It’s a big job to do it right, but if you are young and enthusiastic you can do it. I’m neither anymore, but have done many in the past. It would probably take about $3,000 in materials to fix it right, if you did it yourself. If you have to pay someone, it would probably be cheaper to buy another boat.

Larry, I have no doubt that there is water in the foam. I should be getting 4 mpg and only getting 3. Has to be the weight. My guess a couple 100 extra pounds. Besides that the only thing that is wrong with the boat is it 40 years old and never had a face lift.

That’s a lot of work and can’t be done in a hurry! I have seen many a person start and give up after a months work! I have done a few myself! Its a lot easyer and cheaper to find another hull! Unless it’s a classic leave it alone!

why not sell the entire rig and replace entire rig??

When I sold boats, trade ins like that went to the landfill.

ChrisV, if I sold the compete rig I might get 8500 to 9000. I have been pricing out some completely rigged 17’ with 90 to 115 HP (Release and Bay Craft)and they are close to 25 to 29,000. I know that I can get a Key West 1720 CC with trailer for less than $12,000.

If I can get the boat and trailer for 10 to $12000ish, I figure that I could put the Etec 115 on it (less than 3 years old and still have 3 years of warranty) and have saved 5000. The above is assuming that I get nothing for the Mako and trailer.
