Kids and headboats?

I’d love to take my son out on some big water for just general (ie, cheap) bottom bouncing. He isn’t tall enough to fish over the handrail, but I figure a half day out somewhere would still be a blast for him.

Really just interested in getting him some time out on the big water and maybe catch a few fish that you wouldn’t catch inshore (various snapper, triggers, etc).

He’s 4 yrs old, so definitely not interested in trolling for anything huge.

Any suggestions?

take him to one of the nearshore reefs, non stop black sea bass… he will get tired of catching fish in no time and its not that far out.

Well, my boat is a 40 year old 14’ aluminum, so a nearshore reef isn’t exactly something I can do. But it would be perfect.

I can actually catch small BSB all day over at Breech if I go at low tide and anchor under the bridge. High tide might be a bit too choppy.

I was 8 before my first big water trip. Capt. Stacy outa Morehead City. Thought I was hung up on the bottom but turned out I had an Amberjack and Red Snapper on at the same time. My dad was behind me with his hand on the butt of the rod and I eventually reeled them up. That was 41 years ago and I remember it like it was yesterday.

My dad took me on headboats when I was a kid and I thought it was the coolest thing in the world.

I was a mate on headboats for 8 years - if you take your kids out, take a 4 hour boat if you can find one. I’ve dealt with many a sick child and upset parent, sometimes a sick parent and upset child - or both of them blowing chow all day. Being sick for 8 hours is miserable and can be dangerous for a child, esp in the heat of summer.

I got mine out when he was 15 yo on the sea bass. Went just past Ed-60 to about 70’ to some live bottom. We were drifting and circling the humps and never anchored. He had a ball catching 2 at a time. Late morning wind changed and it got to about 5’ and close for a little while. He got sick a couple times but was a trooper and hung with it. Sitting by the engines I think got him. Moved to the front of the boat and he was ok. We came back in and at the dock by 2pm. Was great trip - says he would go again even if he did get sick. 1/2 day trip is way to go - especially on first trip.

I use to go out on Gulf Stream II from Shem Cr a lot years ago. Then some on the ThunderStar. I was lucky and never got sick. I have seen people get sick before they past the end of the jetties at 5:30am. Boat went 90mi out and didn’t get back until about 5 -5:30pm. They were a sad sack for a looooong time!! I wouldn’t want to chance it with your kid on first trip 'til you knew how they handled it. They do not turn around.

Yeah I definitely will be taking him on a short trip, not an 8hr. That’s just too intense if there’s any chop (and there always is when I go lol).

I caught my first and second gag grouper on the Stacy a few years back, was 12 pounds, which is ho-hum for a gag but sure did taste great. The second one wasn’t a keeper but still a fun day. At least the small grouper didn’t puke his bladder, we weren’t fishing really deep at that point.
