Mac daddy is right about the fun fishing and tournaments. But to clarify, I am not a pro or a tournament fisherman. I enjoy fishing for kings, and a lot of the techniques that I use when fishing for them are contrary to what the tournament guys do, because I would rather catch 5 smaller fish than one monster. The only reason that I posted a link from Capt Stanman’s website, is that he is one of the three main people that taught me how to kingfish, and even though he is one of the best pro/tournament fishermen, he has a lot of general kingfishing knowledge as well(not specific to tournaments). mac daddy you are doing a great job, and I do not want to step on your toes. I just wanted to throw another perspective out there, and am always willing to share my limited knowledge with others.
I dont think mac daddy is saying that we cant put a biggest fish pot together on a friday for club members and see what turns up you know, 50 to 100 bucks a piece more or less and some proceeds go to club remainder goes to winners!!! ETC!!! I may be wrong and there will prob be members who do fish tourneys and represent the club!!! Correct me if I am wrong Don!!!
Wishin I Was Fishin
Wish you guys luck! Sounds like it will be fun if it is done right. Any more it seems all we do is fish tournaments and alot of the “just for fun” is gone. Don’t get me wrong the tournaments are fun, but it definately is run differently.

I am one that suggested “tournaments”, but was using the term very loosely. I was thinking of something more in line with something like some small trivial amount like $10 per person to go to into a big fish pot plus $x.00 to go toward food for a bbq afterward. I do something similar here with some friends striper fishing once a year and we have a blast. It’s not enough money to get anyone serious about it, but yet it gives everyone an incentive to get out there on the same day. King, personally i think even $50 to %100 is kinda high for a group like this where there are people who might have never even fished for KM before. JMO
I guess it’s kinda early to get into details like that now. I’m open to whatever the group decides.
MacDaddy, thanks for putting this together and to others for the pointers you guys have posted.

I would have an interest in a KM club. I’m new to KM fishing (I think I’ve caught 4 in my life), but I’ve recently invested in some rods, reels, and rigs. May/June can’t get here quick enough. I’m a friend of striperskiff’s in Columbia which means I have to drive a couple of hours to get to Charleston, so weeknight meetings are out for me. My personal preference would be keep the entry fee and pot small for weekend get togethers. I think this would greatly discourage the pros from crashing our party. But I’m game for whatever the club decides. I’m looking forward to fishing with you guys this summer.

I agree 100% if we do go forward with this club which I hope we do. This would only be for novice and mid-level king fishermen. Nothing worse than getting crushed by a pro with a 31’ plus CC king mackerel fishing machine. I ask you guys this do we have enough to start the club? Lets get the ball rolling. I live her in Charleston be more than happy to do what it takes to fire this club off the ground.
What is really wrong with fishing with the guys that fish tournys??? I have had a blast fishing with and against these fellas like TOS, In2Deep, Bloodline, BaitRunner, and all. you can learn alot from these guys.
And Look out for Team Fishical Therapy they are a bunch of crazies… I should know I am the Captain.

Thanks Haz for your kind reply, and I have no doubt what you say is true; I know several tournament guys personally and am in the Charlotte club which produced the SKA Florida winner last fall. This has no personality concern, except you guys are a different breed of fisherman, and that is said in great respect. You guys are the professional league and we are the minor league, we’re ok with that, I highly recommend to anyone reading this thread if the pro league is your ambition, go for it. That being said, here are my reasons for my decision: 1. As stated, we are on a different thinking level and have different ambitions; therefore we won’t be compatible in our discussions. 2. Obviously the novice can’t compete, so our small money tournaments would be useless for us, and would be of no interest to you guys. I imagine your response is luck plays a part in the catch, too. We both know how far that goes, with you guys it is skill almost totally, and preparation that we novices aren’t willing to do, plus fast machines to cover far more territory in a day. 3. Clubwise, the novices will respect you guys so much we will allow you to take over the leadership roles and dominate the agenda of the club. 4. The easiest and quickest way to lose members is for the members to feel they have no voice or are inadequate in the club. 5. The mood of the club goes from “fun on the water” to who’s the BEST fisherman and how can I catch up to that guy, which I know is not all bad wanting to improve, we all do. But experienced tournament guys and charter captains are so far ahead of us we won’t ever catch up unless we have the same motivation which is money ambition or stroking the ego; sorry if that sounds personal, it’s just a fact, nothing personal. 6. Again, there is room for all of us on the water, but I have seen first hand what that does to beginners who become disheartened, and to guys who don’t have the funds to keep up and feel lost out as far as the club goes. This is a new idea that I believe has a lot of merit fo
What I meant was the guys in this thread seem to be novice to mid-level king fishermen. Not wanting to feel embarrass to ask pros questions. Not asking a questions is a stupid question I know. I fished Div.3 myself on my own boat for years before I got married so I am experienced in tourneys. We just need to get the club going and fish and share info no matter what your experience level is. Bottom line I just love to chase Mr. King and be more than happy to share fishing knowledge to any one how wants it.
One questin for you gdaddy, after 4 or 5 meetings who are you going to seek out for club buddies, I don’t think it will be the lower level guys in experience. Maybe you are the exception, but guys are going to gravitate to their level buddies, which causes “clicks” and separate groups as always happens in clubs, church, PTA or any gathering; again that’s ok for some, but same level or similar level just makes more congenial atmosphere for everyone, maybe impossible, but I hope not, worth a try…
i think what your saying is you want a club for people who don’t know how to fish.

That’s one way to say it, because beginners and novices obviously don’t know much about fishing for KM, doesn’t mean they don’t know how to fish. What I mean is I would like to limit the club to people who wnat to learn to KM fish for fun, not too seriously. The reasons have already been stated, and should be very clear. A good name for the purpose might be “good ole boys club”, meaning just a bunch of guys hanging out to enjoy the fun of fishing without all the pressure, and hassle of competition. May be a dream, but certainly a good dream…
Guys,
This club looks like a great place for me to start King fishing.
My boat is a little small (Scout 185) but is rigged for Striper fishing. King fishing methods appear to be very close to Striper fishing. I am wanting to move up ASAP.
I picked up 8 Avet 6.0:1 reels on ugly stick custom rods from a SKA team that lives close to me last Feb a year ago in anticipation of king fishing last season… Work got busy and i never made it to the salt.
I live in Chapin SC but driving to Chas is no problem. I see some other midlands area guys are already on board.
I have been fishing Midlands Striper Club tournaments for a while (Low money, more about bragging rights.) Tournaments are alot of fun, you can learn alot form seeing what others are doing.
Looking forward to seeing more on this club, Mac Daddy thanks for our effort on this.
Off to Clark Hill in the am, searching for boss hog Striper.

Troy, you are EXACTLY the guy we are looking for, beginner who can learn to king fish and at the same time my 26 years club experience will get you started right with the big picture. Most KM fishermen are in the beginner to novice class for a reason, the ole’ King Mackerel is a very worthy competitor, and yes, you fish for KM the exact same way you fish for Stripers. The Striper is called the fresh water king, and the king is called the saltwater striper. My friend that info goes back over 20 years, most guys reading that statement today are laughing their a… off, believe me. Thaey are probably calling me crazy too, but I LOVE Striper fishing and Clarks Hill is a dream man. In fact, we are going to be mixing Striper fishing in our club in the Charleston rivers, you can be our first instructor on that subject. Welcome aboard, we’re about ready to sail, stay tuned, see ya’ soon…
OK guys: Ready to sail, I sincerely hope Noone got offended by the negative stuff I felt I had to get out to the public on our club. We probably eliminated about a dozen or more potential problems with that exchange. First organizational meeting will be next week, time and place dependent on preferences from everyone. We need to find a Rest. private meeting room to seat 100 later, so let’s start out with that in mind for now. Preferebly seafood of course, and preferably on the water if possible. We can sell advertising for our newsletter, that Rest. should help on this matter. All you guys get involved, not just a few, and we’ll agree on the best for our club. We will need donated prizes for our monthly raffle, and for our tournaments, don’t forget the kids in this also. Dues should be high enough to eliminate so much fundraising, probably $50.00 range. Let me know at the meeting the night yuo prefer to meet M-Thurs. 7:00. Also your preference for social outings, pro level of speakers, how much free time at every meeting, we only have about 21/2 hrs. to bs, meet and eat IF you want eat at the meetings, and I think that is a must, certainly the Rest. will require we eat if we meet at a Rest. I have we need more free time than meeting time, and most like to leave by 9:30, or sooner, so limit meeting and speaker time to 1hr. total. For that and many other reasons, we do not want to get into a lot of political fishing stuff, fundraising, and TOO much timr spent on business. We need a committee for every important concern of the club, and let the committees do all that discussion by web, conference call, etc. Have confidence in your fellow members, they will do the right thing at least 90% of the time. That’s a lot to digest, but now you will all be prepared in advance to give your opinion from the get-go, let’s get excited and be the best fishing club ever, I think we will be if we start right…
OK guys, in or out? Let me have your ■■■■■■■■ so far. If I’m off track let me know, I don’t want to run this club, just get it started. If serious IS what you want, so be it, several guys have expressed interest as beginners, that’s a good start. All beginners will give a lot of room for improvement, and keep the field even.
All in Don I just love to fish tourney or no tourney!!! Come on guys where you at???
Wishin I Was Fishin
This club is in danger of being cancelled due to lack of interest, better move quickly or we’re gone…
Most of the interest came from out of town fishermen, but I have received 4 or 5 PM’s from local fishermen. Don’t let the discussion die, ■■■■■■■■ of ANY kind wanted, and appreciated. Small weekwnd tournaments seem to be the #1 interest, so we need someone who has experience in running tournaments, legally, etc. I see at least 5-10 boats ready to go, @50.00 each, already 250-1000 in the pot. Or @20.00 100-250 in the pot, for Jetty and shipping chanel fishing that’s a good pot. Most of all, the seminars and exchange of knowledge is going to be extremely helpful to all…
What if we start with an informal dinner/drinks get together just to meet each other, and share info. Official business can come later after we find out how many “regulars” that we have. I am new to the area so I don’t have any suggestions as to where or when to meet. Anybody have any recommendations? I am not any kind of expert on clubs, but this is my 2 cents.
