in town until 7/14. Im heading out of MI tomorrow to try and katch some king. I went out for my first offshore trip last week on my own boat and caught 23 spanish trolling clark spoons. Can someone give me advice on how to catch the king? Also, any advice where to go would be appreciated. Thanks in advance!!
Troll your spoons, catch spanish, put spanish on triple stinger rig(quickly) b/c they die fast, slow troll with spanish. If kings are there, you’ll get bit.
how big should the spanish be?

Doesn’t matter any size will do. Just make sure you have a hook in the head, middle and back. They always slash the bait where you don’t have a hook.
so, troll them slow while they are alive? 2-3 kts? Also, should I troll a few of them? Thanks!!!

I am NOT a king fisherman. I do know they love the spanish though. Bump troll one motor in gear one out. If you fish a single engine, as slow as you can go, sometimes pull it out of gear and the bait should dive a bit. Too fast and your bait is dead or skipping, too slow and it will wrap up your lines. Two of them would be plenty to pull unless you have an experienced crew. Thats a lot of teeth and hooks flailing around. Good Luck.
Been tough fishing for Kings out of MI this year (and last), The King hot spots are usually Belky Bear (13 miles past Jetties) and MB Rocks (about 15 miles NE)… Don’t have coordinantes with me, but they are on most maps.
Best bait for me atleast are live Pogies, dead cigar minnows, but my buddy uses bigs drone spoons.
The Pogies use a treble in the face with a duster and a stinger hook… Cigars i use a duster a 1 oz jig head in the nose (hook mouth shut), and a stinger… Down riggers seem to catch more fish… or a planner , but hand lining a pissed off King can suck if you put the Planner in-line.
Have never used Spanish for anything except for Mahi (which didn’t work), but you should catch a big SOB off of a Spanish.

Or - keep catching Spanish, forget the Kings, go home and have a great meal.

Cocinero = Blue Runner
They’re tasty. Any king mackerel will tell you.
It ain’t no mystery…this beer’s history!
Yes, the Cocinero (Caranx caballus, aka Green Jack or cojinua) found in the Eastern Pacific does look very much like the Blue Runner (Caranx crysos, aka bluestripe jack, Egyptian scad, hardtail jack or hardnose) found here in the Atlantic.
Good to eat when barbie Mexican style. Just gut them, score the side, dowse in Lime juice, wrap in foil and cook over a fire! Delicous! This picture was taken on a small island off the coast of Zihuatanejo & Ixtapa.
Blue Runners make great Tarpon bait … very popular in the Keys.

Smaller kings contain little mercury and are great with a little smoke. The real quetion is where i n heck are they…?? We fished in shallow water Saturday around the Parking Lot and Horseshoe, and I can’t believe we didn’t pick up one…Tons of bait. In other news we got a 80 lb plus hoo in 85 feet of water. I’m going to post pics when I have time to figure it out. Anyone that can do it for me pm me, and I’ll e mail the pics.
I caught a small one on a glow jig in 130’ a month or so ago.
Kind of late in the year but they are usually schooling near one of the cans. I talked to a guy at the ramp who went straight out on Sunday and he said that he didn’t notice.
