King Mackerel Steaks at the grocery

What Sells said. I had some Mercury Missle freshly caught this past summer that was cooked on the grill under hickory chunks and people were fighting for it. It has got to be fresh…Just caught fresh. Smoke it all and use the leftovers for a dip. That or give it away fresh and tell people to grill it ASAP.

Remember, you get what you pay for! In Trinadad king sells for twice the price of groper or mahi and marlin sell for half that!! All fresh off the boats, Shark is the #1 Seller!

Eaten plenty of kingfish, and liked it. Fresh filets marinated in Italian dressing and on the grill. If it’s not fresh, it’s only fit for cat food.
No way would I eat it if it came from a grocery store.
Probably more than a few have eaten it at restaurants after ordering swordfish…or some other fish.

When Florida did DNA studies on imported frozen “grouper” half the two thirds came back as unidentifiable. NEVER buy seafood wrapped in those styro / saran wrap packs. Let your nose tell you if it is fresh or not.

what kinda grouper do yall think this was?

I would put money that is Pangasius Catfish aka…Swai, Basa, or river cobler, buch of fancy names for a nasty catfish from Vietnam or China. Notice how small they are, 20" minimum on Grouper…I will take a guess and say Folly rd Pig?

honestly dont remember which one, it was several months ago and I used to go to all of the stores for sunday AM butcher deals… but I was thinking the same thing when I took the photo.

I love the overlapping product of origin stickers on the front of that package. I’ve seen that before. I think in this case the bottom one says CANADA then they changed it to USA when they realized grouper wasn’t exactly a Canadian fish since they are a warm water reef fish. Don’t eat any asian farmed fish. I’ve been to the fish farms in China and they are disgusting with their neon green water pumped full of chemicals. Lots of them also use Aqua Marine to control bacteria, which causes cancer in mammals.

That could be, but the pangasiaus catfish are typically a bit longer bodied than this fillet (I realize I’m responding to someone who knows more about this than I do, so take my words with a grain of salt).

The pic looks to me to have more of the body shape and meat texture of Nile Perch, or perhaps that of common cichlids, like tilapia… It also has the hallmark of farm raised fish, which (to my eyes) is the more pronounced amount of fat within the flesh (white streaks more prominent). My guess is that this is a farm raised of some sort.

I remember selling Nile perch (frozen fillets) back around 1996-2000 when I was the manager of a chintzy little seafood thing in a grocery store. Was a good eating fish, and looked identical to what I see in that pic.

It’s one of those “freshwater groupers” :face_with_head_bandage:, which you can find on the same aisle as all-white meat whole chickens.

PAUL IF YOU LOOK REAL CLOSE AT THE NUMBER ON THE PACKAGE OF FISH AKA SWAI NOT GROUPER IT CAME FROM PIG 14 AT FOLLY AND MAYBANK. PLEASE DONT REFER TO MY OLD STORE ON FOLLY BEACH. I DID SELL A LOT OF THAT PRODUCT TO LOCAL RESTURANTS THAT PASSED IT OFF AS GROUPER. THEY DONT HAVE LEGISLATION TO PREVENT THEM FROM DOING THIS.HOW OLD WAS THAT PICTURE BECAUSE THE GOVERERNMENT PASSED LEGISLATAION ABOUT 4 YRS. For everyone that cares about “Truth in Seafood” OK…All of my F&B, Wholesalers and Commercial fisherman. . I will be speaking.

Truth in Seafood is coming up in the Senate. We need to pick this ball back up and get the Senators to support it. There’s a subcommittee meeting on Feb. 6 at 9:30 in the Grissett Building (207). If you can be there, that would be great. They’ll take public testimony. Anyone else you can think of should be there as well. Preferably other dealers and restaurateurs that support the bill.
