King Mackerel Steaks at the grocery

So today I saw something new at the grocery in the seafood display. They had King Mackerel Steaks for sale for $9.99. They were pale grey and lumpy looking. What the heck would people do with this? I think a lot of people are going to buy it, grill it like swordfish, and be turned off to seafood for a long time. At least it was USA wild caught.

I’ve eaten a lot of grilled king mackerel steaks. So long as they are fresh (slight gloss and good firmness to the texture, and shiny skin), it’s tops.

Are you saying that the pale grey/lumpy meant that they were spoiled? Or are you saying that king mack isn’t good grilled?

Saying “I am offended” is telling everyone else that you cannot control your own emotions, and thus you need everyone else to do it for you.

King mackerel is only good if you cook some bacon on the side and then only eat the bacon, so long as you don’t let it ever come in contact with the fish.

There is a place in mexico beach, Fl that has awesome fish dip made with kings. Otherwise, its horrible to me. I have not seen KM steaks in a grocery store before.

Both I guess. Primarily the meat looked spoiled and gross but most fish at the grocery looks like that to me. I just feel bad for the people that buy this expecting a something like fish chicken (swordfish, mahi, or salmon) and get burned. King Mack is edible but only if you know what you are doing and if it is fresh.

Yes, it does have to be fresh for sure. I’ve always marinated/basted it with soy or teriyaki, and it was always good. It’s been literally a decade though so I can hardly remember the last time I had it.

Y’all can give me your kings if you don’t want them lol.

I cooked some in that rice wine/ sesame seed / wasabi powder glaze thing that I have seen and posted on this site for BFT. Turned out good - not as good as tuna by any stretch, but good.

Harris Teeter has grouper on sale for 11.99 or 12.99 can’t remember which it is.

King Mackerel looks grey when it is fresh. Not a fish I like to eat, but many people like it.

if kings are 9.99 and grouper is 12.99, that aint no head scratcher.

ive seen kingfish at the asian food store on rivers avenue before and gave it a try out of curiosity and grilled it with a soy, sesame oil, ginger, garlic, and wasabi basting and it wasnt bad at all. late last summer i caught a barely legal king between barracudas on a charter and blackened it and it was actually really good. needless to say the fresh, smaller one was much better but if i catch more ill stick to eating the smaller ones for sure.

ill brine it and then throw it on the smoker and it turns out pretty good. I smoke it until its jerky like, I enjoy it at least

I would never buy it at the store though…

“mr keys”

I would eat that slimer before the month old sword steaks filled with worms or the shat they call grouper for 12.99/lb…or even the farm raised shrimp.

They cracked down on folks selling ponga (and others)as grouper a few years ago. so, i’d like to believe that now its really grouper now.

Not for $12.99 lb…Only grouper available right now is out of Mexico and wholesale this morning was close to $15 for skin on. Anyone that would buy fish in a grocery store (not Whole Foods or Earthfare) gets what they pay for.

10-4 sells, you know better than anyone! I dont buy fish at grocery stores. 9 times out of 10 if i eat fish, i caught it just hrs before hand. Guess it is like those vacuum pack filet mignon at wally world for 7 bucks. tried one of them a few yrs ago and threw it away after the first bite.

truth be told, I will take a “that day” king that has been bled and hickory smoke it in 1" thick steaks…love it! save the left overs for a great fish dip or spread.

So the Harris Teeter is ripping people off and what they have at $12.99 isn't grouper? Either we have fraud on their part or libel on yours. Someone needs to get to the bottom of this.

Upon further review, the product wild caught out of Indonesia was $11.99 per LB. Appeared to be Grouper but didn’t look nearly as nice as what you would see at Sell’s place. In college I lived near the Meeting Street Pig and we lived off of Blackened Orange Roughy from there. I can only imagine what we were really eating.

Many business’s who deal in seafood happy to sell $15 grouper for $13 if it’s on its last leg. Not sure if any other fish i’ve dealt with has a pungent a smell as old grouper or old wreckfish…
