Hit the shipping channel with my brother in law this am and before we got to the second set of bouys we had already lost 1 king at the boat and boated another, also had 3 sharks released as well as a couple of bites that we missed.
We were slow trolling live pogies and most of the bites were on the downrigger at about 21’.
We found menhaden in IOP marina where I am keeping the boat.
Yes we were using regular king rigs with stinger hooks, just drop lines in as you past the jetties and and slow troll out past the buoys . We did also catch a few nice size sharks(5-6’), lot of fun but can not get them ■■■■ $3 king rigs out of their mouths:smiley:.
Most of the kings were 15-20lb range and we seem to have a good bite till around 11am or so.
Never did see any spanish, we kept a couple of spinning reels rigged but never saw anything.
Yea the wind has been a witch, in my little 21’ I am only going to deal with so much wave height and it looks like we may not make it out again this week.
May be back in a month or so to try it again, also saw a lot of kings at the docks
We went out Thurs morning and had a heck of time catching some menhaden. Part of the problem might be I need a 10’ net too as we were out in front of Morris Island.
Trolled for abot 2 hours mostly with spoons and plugs. Some decent waves out there for our 20’ boat as well. Saw a lot of birds between first and second bouys. Trolled around them for a little while with another boat but neither of us caught any. Never saw the first fish run through or break the surface.
Did see a lot of bait and marked some fish out near R13. Like you said down between 15-25’ it seemed.
Decided yesterday would probaby be too rough to enjoy it so we stayed up the river for trout/reds.
Thanks for your info and hope i get back to try that again as well. Will be in Fripp area in July for a week so may give it a go there.
We had a hard time catching the pogies also, seem VERY scattered. One day I could find them every where and the next they were no where to be found. I would like to thank one of the guides at IOP marina, he told us where they were on Wed and sure enough one throw there and I had a tank full, after 20-30 other throws elsewhere.
Kind of funny when you have a bait tank full you see them flipping everywhere but when the tank is empty they can be hard to find
