I made a bunch of rigs last night using 20# 7 strand wire. Is that strong enough?
Maybe, but if you get a smoker on there, he’ll probably chew threw that 20 pound. It all depends. I use mostly 43 or 60 pound single strand; or right in that general area. Some brands make 46 pound, others 40, etc… So, between 40 and 60 test, either single or stranded will work. I use stranded wire on artificials like plugs because the 7 strand allows the plug to swim more freely. I like single strand on live bait rigs for different reasons, one is they are quick to tie and I feel like live bait tracks better with single strand. If I use Drone spoons, I use a mono leader only, no steel.

great info, thanks.
I’ll retie them.
When you guys troll using ballyhoo do you use wire or heavy mono leader?
I use 100lb fluorocarbon
Seems like you’d get bit off pretty regularly using mono - do you?
We had a baby one chew through some wire last weekend. His older brothers did not, however.
use 20 to 30 lb fluro and tie to between 40 to 60lb wire. use a spro swivel.

Have heard good things about fishing with flourocarbon. Anybody got any pics of rig diagrams using flouro?
From NC but frequent Murrells Inlet a few times a year!
rig it the same way you would mono. if it’s lighter than 80# use a uni knot at the connections. If over 80# crimp. For what they are describing get a 6-8’ section of flour.tie to a spro swivel then go from spro to hook with a 12" piece of wire. Leave a little(1/2") tag end at your hay-wire twist(hook end) for a nose sprur for you bally… run naked or whatever color skirt.
Talked with a guy at a gas station last night filling up a GW Islander, he said all he fishes is flouro, sure you get a few bite offs here and there, but at least you get the bites, he said his catch rate darn near doubled when he used flouro. The idea is to getthe fish attracted to the bait in the first place.
Rigs up with 100 or 130 lb flouro. Was in a hurry so we didn’t talk rigs much.
Worth a try IMO!

It’s good stuff, when neccesary. You can get away with a mono leader a lot of times. If you’re targeting fish that aren’t line shy, it’s a waste of money. If you’re going after fish that are spooky, and especially if the fishing is slow, fluoro can make a difference. Double the bites??? i’m not so sure about that. But your number will be better. Fluoro is pricey, so i’d use it wisely. It only takes one black tip to ruin a few feet of fluoro, and at 10 bucks a pop for a small roll of just light test, that can add up.

If you are live baiting thats awful big.
try 20# line to a 12’ to 20’ of 20# floro, with a 35# spro to 32# single strand to 58# single wire.
If what your using works for you then don’t change.
