I’ve tried trolling the shipping channel last summer for kings with no luck. I have a 19ft CC, and was trying to find some new territory for kings, and I know it’s been slow the past few years for kings (minimal posts on the king section).
Looking at the public “reef” portion of DNR’s site (link from here), there are the charleston 60, kiawah nearshore, and “lowcountry angler reef”. I’ve never bottom fished these and imagine a bunch of BSB, but does anyone think these areas would be decent trolling areas for kings?
Anyone have other king trolling areas i should try in my 19ft?
Thanks Opps. I had read his post a few days back. He is saying 50-100 feet. The charleston 60 is in about 60 feet I think, but unsure the depth at the “lowcountry angler” reef or the kiawah nearshore…or if anyone ever fishes those reefs-- I never hear any reports about them.
There’s not a nearshore section on charlestonfishing.com. In pensacola, there was a whole section dedicated to the bottom fishing within 15 miles of shore. Seems like it’s pretty much offshore gulfstream trolling or inshore reds/trout. Not much in between. Would love to eventually see a jetties/nearshore section on the CFF.
I would love to see a section for that was well although alot of guys do post in offshore about the grouper and other species at reefs but youll never hear the great ones mention a # or specific spot !!!
I fish out of folly and go to the lowcountry angler reef and kiawah nearshore all the time in my 17 ft Key West. Some Spanish just showed up, haven’t seen any kings yet but they will be around.
Went out last week caught lots of BSB, (i’ll be there June 1st to get my 5), caught alot of weakfish jigging, and several good size bluefish. Should only get better as the water gets warmer and it’s a real easy ride there especially the lowcountry angler reef.
Truthfully you will have your best chance if you get away from all the known public reefs. When your riding around stay glued to your sounder. Live bottom areas have produced a lot more kings for me than any reef on any public chart.
