Kings while bottom scouting

Considering a trip to black banks and starting to troll @ the 60 and bearing 150 degrees to 100’ in search of some new live bottom numbers for the future. Trying to go as easy as possible. Options are pulling stretch 25’s and Yozuri Bonitas. Is this a plausible option for trying to catch kings while scouting new bottom? Would it be better to put out a sea witch & Ballyhoo spread? Thanks.

First options were correct. Rapala and stretches. All you need

Include a planer with a 3 1/2 drone spone at least 30 feet behind it. Use 130 lb mono. You don’t need wire if pulling at 6-7 knots. There are times when this will outfish any other lure in your spread 10-1.

Also, if you are targeting kings, put a ballyhoo out there with a sea witch in front of it as you would offshore but make sure you have a double hook rig as they like to bite the baits in half.

Only planers I’ve found are the ones @ Sportsmans Warehouse (only time I looked) and I believe it’s the typ that hooks to the swivel but I could be wrong. Which types of planers are preferred so I can order the right type. When I buy planers in think top water Stripers.

Old Salty makes good planers. some people seem to prefer them over the sea striker ones but I don’t really notice a difference myself. I use a 2, 3 and 4 depending on how fast and how deep i want to go. I like to Drone spoons with the screw and nut used to attach the hook to the spoon, not the ones with the bent hook shank. I like to replace the hooks with a Mustad 34007 SS hook to prevent rusting.

Pull some lures and you should still put some ballyhoo out in case there are some dolphin around.

Rapala X-raps and drone spoons. Throw those stretches in the garbage!

Trip is short notice and if I can’t buy in Columbia I can’t get it. What size & model X-Raps?

I don’t know where you can buy the x-rap magnum 30. I’ve bought mine off of amazon. The stretches are popular and I don’t know why, they roll and pop up at anything over slow trolling speed and the factory hooks are worthless if you hook anything worthwhile.

Okay, I am going to share with you a secret of the cosmos… This was a king killer when I was a child… I wonder if they took it off of the market because it was too effective:

It was called the “Cisco Kid”. The red head with the silver glitter over the white body.

It’s like going back in time to see a Cisco Kid. They made serious large mouth bass lures back in the 1950’s…when there were not many lures to choose from.

Thats how i found some new to me bottom numbers a few trs ago and i caught a king along the way

SAFMC you suck!

the x raps come in different numbers 10,15,20,30 the numbers identify what depth they will slow troll at 1.5-3sog on a gps…

I have about 15 different ones… a few guys have recommended switching the middle treble to a 2 hook and to switch both hooks to an owner hook… I have yet to do it

irrc they do offer a color very similar to the cisco kid its a high silver back body with a metallic head… I don’t recall the exact video but if you yourtube the xrap I think peter miller had a video of kings on artificals and shows a few ways he runs them…

Just make a couple meat hook/handline rigs with a Honda hood sized planer, bungee, some heavy mono, and have some fun. Once the water warmed up towards summer and we didn’t go offshore as often we used to always have 1-3 in the water when we fished inside 100ft as a kid. Catching a 50+ lb king or cobia on a handline is a good time. Also caught a couple grouper if they were rigged to run deep enough.

I’m ready to go fishing. If Friday shapes up, probably have room for a couple of anyone is interested. Fishing til lunchtime.
