I am going to take the leap this season and use a kite to live bait fish for kings. I have tld 15 and 25s that I was going to use. What do you guys say to this to much or to little.
Hey buddy, good to hear from you; google kite fishing gear has tons of info, just checked it for you. I’m interested in fishing that kite with you, I told you a buddy used a kite with a 6 lb. Spanish, caught a 33 lb. King in Wrightsville Tournament, won 30k I believe, that was back in ‘86, kites aren’t new in Fla. You just missed a kite seminar last week i believe. Search for thatseminar listing, PM admin for that cpt’s name maybe…see ya’ soon

Those reels will be perfect for that application. Use a old senator or any type reel spooled with dacron for your kite reel.
I have a kite as well and looking forward to trying it, I may even give it a whirl for sharks in the inlets when it is too rough for my boat in the shipping channel for Kings

You hit the nail on the head:smiley:
I use TLD 15’s and also just picked up a couple of the Avet 5.8’s as well, itching to try them out on something but it is going to be THREE WEEKS. May have to try them on some Hartwell stripers just to see how well they work.
Just picked up a kite but never used it, been watching all these shows on tv and it looks to be a good idea and kind of wanting to try and catch some blacktips with it as well.
I have a Pfluefer Contender reel that I have loaded up with some heavy mono that I will use for the kite reel. I have looked on ebay and you can pick up a kite rod for 50 or so

I have some old roller rods, gdaddy does, too; they should be fine for the kite I would think, not sure…

If you have any penn senators they work just fine and aren’t very expensive. Dacron line works great on them.

Thanks Team Old School, there you are gdaddy, I also have an old reel that would be fine, if you don’t, doesn’t need to be a 4/0 or 6/0 reel, in fact I believe mine is fast retrieve, which would be more important than size I would think.

Barton & Burwell is starting to carry more kite stuff. go to www.tackletogo.com they have about the best selection of stuff. You don’t see much kite fishing out of s. fla. I’m not sure the kite is necessary for kings unless you’re planning on fishing from an anchor or with the sea anchor out. We have used it in the shipping channel with little success.
It is fun watching them harass a bait and making several swings before they get the bait.
Best of luck.
Jeremy and Robert of Barton and Burwell are the only guys I buy from as far as blue water and Kite fishing. I have been kite fishing for a few years know even before it was popularized. I like to kite fish over wrecks and in the channel. Nothing like seeing the baits being chased on top and being skied on by kings. Drags a screaming what a rush.
good…pressure them to get a better stock. Had to order some stuff from down south that they didn’t have. Which type of kite are you sailng.
Aftco kite for know I have heard some good things about the SFE kites though. Jeremy at B&B said he would try to keep them in stock but said he had to order a high number of them for the first order which is ruff. What you flying? I got Jeremy to stock kite marker floats and he is steadily ordering more things as interest spreads on kites.
that would be good, my 5 yr old snapped one of my spars for an SFE.
