knots

Another thread on tying leaders with/ without swivels got me thinking about knots. I did not want to high jake previously mentioned thread so I started this one.

I am a swivel guy but will probably try tying braid to fluoro. after reading the other thread.

I have always used a clinch knot to tie fluoro to hook and swivel.

The palomar seems a lot easier.

Is it as good? Has anyone tried it? Just curious. I definitely have enough excuses for not catching fish. Not looking for a new one.

Yes, the palomar is a really strong knot and easy to tie.

You forgot the disclaimer:

It’s easy to tie as long as the lure/leader/contraption isn’t overly large/long/or has tripple trebble hooks hanging off of it.

The Palomar knot is certainly one of the simplest and strongest knots for mono or flouro. If tied correctly, the Palomar knot is a 100% knot. I have had the opportunity of tying and testing hundreds of palomar knots on a line testing machine over the years and a properly tied Palomar in mono is as strong as the line it is tied in. In the majority of controlled tests the line will break somewhere other than the knot.

In fluoro (a bit stiffer, slicker, and less forgiving due to less stretch) the Palomar seems to be slightly less than 100% but still extremely strong and better than most any other knot.

One important note however is that the illustration you have posted is an incorrectly tied Palomar. When correctly tied, the “loop” of the Palomar seats itself just above the hook/swivel eye at the base of the knot. The illustration you found has the loop seated down on the hook shank where it could be cut by the sharp gap in most hook eyes.

When correctly tightening a Palomar you should moisten the knot and hold BOTH standing and tag ends together from start to finish and tighten it slowly until you can make sure that the loop slides just over the hook/swivel eye. Once the loop is positioned at the base of the knot (still touching the hook/swivel eye) then pull both lines very firmly to finish the tightening. Note that the loop should NOT flip up over the knot against the standing part of the line or the finished knot will not be quite as strong as it would be with the loop at the base of the knot against the hook/swivel eye.

Lastly, due to the sometimes significant differences in the properties of different brands of modern flouro/mono lines (stiffness, stretch, slickness, etc…) you should always test your knots at home. Simply tie to a snap swivel, hook it to a scale or just the workbench, then take some wraps with gloves several feet away and pull slowly until something breaks. If you are using and tying good knots the line will mot often break somewhere other than the knot, or in heavy line

Stick with one knot.Tie it right then maybe check out another knot.I Bimini when I braid to Mono leader.I Snell my own hooks and it is very simple.Take a hook put the leader through the eye then hold the line you put through the hook against the hook shaft. Now make 6 wraps around the hook shaft and put the other end through the eye of the hook and pull tight.

Thanks for the ■■■■■■■■ guys. I tried the palomar and it did not look rite. Tied it several times before going back to the clinch knot. I was tying 30# flouro and it just wasn’t working. I may try it with the 20#. It is nauseating when you loose a good fish, reel in the line and see an untied or broken knot.

jipride, check out the Trilene knot. It’s a version of the clinch knot but it holds a lot better. I still wrap five times with it but am useing light line. I had problems with the clinch knot comming undone until I started useing this one. I also use the palomar knot but with heavy line it is not as easy to use but I have had very good luck with it.

I hope this helps.

If you are tying braid line directly to flouro, use the Albright Special knot shown here. It is fairly easy to master and will hold extremely well. I use this on my offshore reels and haven’t lost a fish due to this particular knot breaking.

I use a uni knot when attaching flouro line to a swivel.
