kudos to sellsfish !!

sooo yesterday I decide to venture off into the wild blue yonder to try to catch my first grouper I don’t get out on the big pond very much because when I do I am usually the chummer … now its the butt crack of dawn when he wakes me up and says “lets go” and again I ask him are you sure I am going to catch a grouper … he says " I promise you will" I said oookaaay. boats in the water and off we go to get the bait … Paul runs to his bait keeper and low and behold is hanging high and dry caught on the pylon. welll Paul is not a happy camper at this point he spent all day the day before catching bait for this trip… remember he promised I would catch a grouper. so off to the harbor we go to find bait . Paul threw the net a two times and we had a live well full with some of the biggest pogies I had ever seen , they must have gone 9" 10" easily. we even had a few to share

[/img]

live well was full … pelican was full and off we went for me to catch my grouper … after about an hours run Paul finds the perfect spot. We drifted it a few time then he set the hook. I bait my hook and send it down… the rod tip starts bumping … I ask him "reel it now … he says “NO” … bump bump bump …NOW?..“NO”…bump bump bump…NOW? …“NO” the next thing I knew that rod was bent right in half and he says “NOW!!” this fish is putting up a hell of a fight ( to me anyways ) and I tell Paul this has to be an AJ …I reel and reel some more cussing the whole time cuz I just knew it was an amber jack . finally the fish hits the surface and this is what it is

[/img]

all 18lbs of him …( sells was wiping forehead and saying “WHEW”) I was squealing like a little girl first drop and first fish for me and it was my grouper! I caught another one but he was short and had to go back … we proceeded to catch the

Great job on the reel!

Way to put her on the fish, Paul!!

What was on the rod in pic #3 when Paul was proudly displaying his endangered ARS?

Sorry for another post but i read your report again and started to laugh about the drill sergeant comment. Been there done that as i often fish with just my wife. And i’m retired military.
Some don’ts i recall:
Don’t yell at wife in the negative only encourage even if they are doing everything wrong!
Don’t laugh at wife or heckel if fish is winning!
Don’t ignore her when she says she has big fish on and its going to spool her! (it did) :frowning:
Don’t ever miss a gaff after she has won the fight!
These are just a few of the things i’ve done which didn’t turn out well.
Again great story.

hdgb…he did that on purpose …he knew I was getting worn out by that stupid fish and he didn’t want me to give up so he started talking to me like that because he knew it would make me mad and I would finish the job!! that king is the biggest fish I have ever caught… to me it is twice the size and it weighs triple it was all I could do to hold it up for the pic when I had just got done fighting it … paul said it took me about 15 min to get it in the boat but i sure seemed longer than that I was using pauls tevala rod ( in pic behind me ) with a mono leader …I was so afraid I was going to lose that fish

Fun to read…thanks.

Wasn’t bashing paul in fact sounds like he did very well
by the way you describe the day in such glowing terms.
I was just saying it made me laugh cause i have not done so well.
One time my wife and i both had kings on and she was yelling about how big hers was , well i had a little guy on so i fugured hers was as well and she was just exadurating and ignored her and realed mine in. Then i heard a bang against the side of the boat and yelled what hell was that , she said my fish now get your ass over here and qaff it hehehehe 38lbs and the biggest she ever caught. never doubt her again

23 …thanks:smiley: …like what you did with the pics that’s cool!

hgdb…didn’t think you were bashing him …lol was just trying to explain that’s all  Paul is very passionate when it comes to fishing and he cuts no slack … especially with me[:0] …and you can ask anyone that fishes with him … he will bark like a drill Sargent if it is needed and at that time it was needed …lol

What an excellent report. That is one nice King you got there. So glad you got your grouper as well. Those pictures of the thunderstorms rolling in are amazing. Excellent pictures and story. Thanks for sharing.

30 lb. king on a spinner, that’s Fla. style, here we thnk we need 400 yds. line and a 30-50 lb. rod.

Good catch on that spinner, I can see why you thought you were getting spooled; also good on sells for fishing with light tackle and sporty fun…
