Labor (day) of Love

I grew up with a very early 60’s 3 hp 2 cylinder Johnson. I have had the motor sitting out in storage for the last 20 years. Thought I might try to bring the old jon boat and motor back to life to play around with. Started with the motor today. The motor is very simple. It cranks in gear, has no reverse as you simply rotate it 360 degrees. Found the carborator float is made out of cork coated in epoxy???

The gas tank located internally in the motor. You can adjust the carborator jets on the front of the motor.

After 20 years of sitting it fired up after a few pulls and a little starting fluid. Water pump was working but I guess I should replace. I am also going to rebuild the carb and get rid of the cork float.

Now I just need a trailer so I can go get the boat from the old home place! Anybody have one for a 12’ Jon Boat???

You should take that puppy to the stream! What kind of fuel mileage does she get?

Nice work!

If you can’t fix it with a hammer, you’ve got an electrical problem.

The old motors are the best. Nothing breaks and they were designed to run forever. Not to break down once a year to keep the manufacturer in business selling parts. No Offense mechanics.

I don’t know what kind of mileage it gets but you can ride a long time on a gallon of gas - you just better not be in a hurry to get where you want to go. It will idle way down and run very smooth with the 2 cylinders. Great for trolling in the creeks.

WD I appreciate the lead on the trailer. It turned out to be painted and I think I am going to hold out until I can find a galvanized trailer.
