Spent the weekend down in the beautiful Lowcountry and the goal was to chase reds with the fly, kayak and drink beer. Left Richmond at 5 am and hit Charleston at 11 on the dot. Was on a flat in the yak with my 7 weight by 11:45 for the high tide at noon. Saw 3 fish and the third one finally decided he was hungry enough to eat my crab! 22 inches, 4.5 pounds on the boga. Not very big, but a perfect size red for my first tailer on the fly.
Saw one more red and a sheepshead before the water got too low but both spooked when I dropped it on their nose. Several other boats and waders were on the flat, did not see any others hook up.
Saturday spent all day watching the Hokies and college football and chasing schools of land tuna downtown.
Sunday headed to another well known flat and was greeted by over cast skies, a stiff breeze and more folks on the water. Didn’t matter, Had my best day on the flats, even without catching a fish. I saw 9 fish, cast to six, hooked 2 and lost them both. These fish were all 25" and up I’d guess. Sure are fun on the 7 weight Colton.
Monday went back to the same flat and the breeze was worse. One other guy wading the same flats as I, did not see him hook up. I saw 4 fish and was ignored by all of them.
Tuesday got to swing in and see the Lowcountry Fly Shop and shoot the cow turds for an hour or so with Scotty D and his guys over there. Thanks for the fly and location tips gentleman! Awesome shop Scotty! Hit the same flat one last time on the high at 4:30. The wind was absolutely wicked. Made poling the kayak incredibly difficult. No one else was out on the flat, but neither were the fish. Only saw one cruiser. LOTS of bait up there though.
Fantastic trip and I can’t wait to get down again.
