Ladyfish

Gigged a nice ladyfish in NI last week…got a decent amount of meat despite the bones…Blackened…not too shabby!

words i didn’t expect to see put together in a sentence: “gigged” “ladyfish” “meat” and “not shabby”

interesting!

You must be a hell of cook! See what you can do with some menhaden

Someone threw me a recipe for mullet…almost vomited in my mouth at the thought…but menhaden…Hmmm…might give it a try.

You actually ate a lady fish and turn your nose up at a mullet? Get a nice big one out of some brackish water and fry it up nice and fresh, mullet aint bad at all. Let’s not even talk about someone that knows how to smoke it. :stuck_out_tongue:

But I guess with your comment on the menhaden your not too serious and I truly believe your lady fish eating was all in your mind.

Smoked mullet is big time popular in NW FL. You can see smoke shacks all over going in near Cedar Key. We had to try it, stopped and got some, it was super! They also sold smoked mullet chip dip which was excellent!

mullet is my standby- if you’ve never had smoked mullet dip, you’re missing out!

at some point soon i’ll be putting a smoked fish dip recipe in this forum- gonna put a pile of spanish fillets on some coals tonight.

Mullet taste pretty good fried also.

I’ll second the fried mullet. Back in the early '80s I worked in a local seafood restaurant that was on the water. We would go out back and throw the cast net for mullet then fry 'em up in the kitchen. They were great. I suppose DHEC would not approve.

A friend and I got into the ladyfish thick about a month ago. Had a great time catching the “tiny torpedo’s.” We ended up bringing two of the biggest ones home and cleaned them. I put them in the freezer and marked the bag special, was thinking of putting them into a fish stew this winter with some bluefish I kept. Good to hear they are “not to shabby” as tablefare.
