Are there any ladyfish around this time of year? and if so where could you catch them (without a boat) and what is the best bait, live, artificial, etc?
I’ve caught them in the surf my past two times out. Try to cast to the green water. Got them on cut bait and live shrimp.
Why are you specifically targeting them?
Well, main reason is just to have another type of shark bait, and I haven’t caught any in several years. Used to have fun catching them.
Kev
Caught a couple near dynamite hole. Used one for cut bait. It was like ringing the dinner bell for the sharks. Couldn’t get my weight to the bottom before the other rod was going off. Didn’t have the right setups so eventually lost all my terminal tackle. Bought some wire and 200# mono the next day.
So there are some in the area, awesome. What are you catching them on? Are there any around those finger jetty’s at the South end of Sullivan’s near ft Moultrie?
Kev
I was fishing drop rigs with mud minnows. Not sure how close they get to shore. I certainly wasn’t targeting them. Just luck.
Dang those things are slimy.

Im just looking to get my hands on a few for shark bait, something different. Ive never caught any from shore in the area, just hoping someone can lead me in the right direction.

bloody and fun to catch, what more could a guy ask for in shark bait??!! lol

I would try walking the beach on the far north side of Folly. Gotta walk down that pedestrian only road. There won’t be anything between you and the Morris lighthouse, besides nasty breakers. Throw something shiny or with crazy shiny action. Subsurface Rapala or something similar might do well. The jetties at the blowout on folly might hold some too, just watch out for surfers. I used to always catch them on the beach when fishing for trout. When you see a rip of muddy water shooting out into the clear water you’re in business.
I’m no ladyfish expert but I do like ladies and only some smell like fish…

ok park at the cul-de-sac at the far north of e ashley ave? is it like other areas, you can park along the edge of the road as long as you are off the pavement and not blocking driveways or anything?
Kev
Yes exactly. You’ll see the signs to stay out of the cul-de-sac itself. Pretty straight forward. There is a big jetty on the beach that should have some action. If that doesn’t work I would try walking west along the beach and throwing out along the channel drop off. This time of year you might even pick up a Spaniard or two.

How about spoons? And I’m bringing some freshwater jerk baits silver and gold colors will that work? what other live baits would work?
Kev
Spoons ought to do the trick. Sounds like you have some freshwater gear. Maybe bring a spinnerbait. For live bait, mudminnows and finger mullet might do the trick. But in my experience, those slimy, bloody, leader fraying ladyfish like something shiny, fast and erratic. Any combination of those should do. God knows they have taken plenty of the tails of Gulp 3" Swimming Mullet on a jighead with big eyes. Between them and bluefish, I’m in the hole more than I’d like to recall.
Let me know how it goes if you ever make it out there… you’ve got me curious.

I will definitely be there. 10 days and counting, me and some friends are coming to shark fish for a week. This is our third year coming, we shark fish early and late, and fish the piers and jettys during the day. Last year we came in june and had like 3" of rain the first day so that kind of hurt our shark fishing the first day, but this year looks better. We have caught the usual trout, reds, flounder, and so on, but this year we want to try more for sheep and lady fish just to say we caught something different. ill let you know how me do, hopefully we can find some lady fish and blues pretty quickly.
