Lake Marion - Fishing in Early September

Family rented a house in Wyboo Creek on Lake Marion for Labor Day and bringing the boat and a couple canoes down. Plan on going after some cats at night next to the Santee Dam but was wondering what fishing is good for this time and the best approach at it? Would love to catch some Crappie & Bass with the nephews but never had much luck in freshwater. Just a saltwater fisherman trying his luck in freshwater so any help with techniques/general locations would do.

Take the canoes and try the borrow pit behind the dam for panfish and bass.
Be there at daylight and fish til around 8:30 or 9 , especially if it is cloudy and not too hot.

Repeat the same late in the afternoon.

For catfish , try night time in the shallows around the islands ( big water side of the islands) with cut bait, bream, or fresh bream heads…

Let me know when you have the fish fry… #128521;

what boat are you bringing down? if capable, taking the kids down to the other side of lake moultrie and riding down and back up the Lock is always fun, plus there is good fishing in the river down there too

Appreciate the help 4JS.

We are bringing down a 24 foot center console everglades. I think our plan is to ride the locks one day for sure…I never done it myself and want to see what its all about.

oh yeah, youll make it in no time…just keep an eye out for the weather, moultrie can get worse than the charleston jetties when the wind is blowing right. and also keep in mind they will shut the lock down for lightening, so be sure youre not on the wrong side.

there is lots of wildlife beyond the lock. birds, gators, fish jumping around. and there are a couple cool bridges and train trusses that the kids will probably enjoy.

KRB17 - If you have never been on Santee Cooper lakes keep in mind that the place is full of uncut timber and is very dangerous. I cannot stress that operating at idle speed when out of the Channel markers is the safe thing to do.

Wyboo/Potato Creek may have some Striper Schooling activity early/late with early being your best option due to the boat traffic labor day weekend. Just wanted to make sure that you were aware of the navigational isses of that lake.

Striper fishing is not allowed on Santee in summer months.
