Hydrotherapy, another friend and I went trolling. It was shaping up to be a great night. We were not there long before we pulled in a striper at least 28 1/2". There was an old guard that was watching us like a hawk. We kept trolling thinking all was good. A little while later, we were in the corner and pulled in one over 33". That guard started yelling and screaming for us to immediately stop the boat and back up to talk to him. At first, I thought he was joking. I then saw that he was not, and I asked him if he was serious. I told him that I was not stopping the boat because I still had 4 lines out. He was still yelling at us like he was scolding a child or something. He walked toward his shack, and I could tell he was on his radio. Less than 2 minutes later, we see headlights coming on top of the dike on the Short Stay side. We started out away from the dam a little since the guard was in his shack. Next thing we know, the car has blue lights flashing. We started to hear a voice through a megaphone saying “small boat, come over here, I need to talk to you”. I thought that was kind of funny him saying small boat. I don’t have a big boat, but what other boat was he comparing mine to. We were the only ones out there. Well, we went over toward the dike and he said I did not have a permit. I told him that I did, and I even pointed it out. He still insisted that I did not. He told us to meet him over in the corner by the wall. We went over there and exchanged words for a few. He was I think, Berkeley County. I could be wrong. I did not care. Don’t get me wrong, I have a great respect for our LEOs, but they can talk to you a little better. It wasn’t like I held up a store. Anyways, he said that we cannot be inside the bouys unless we are catching bait. He said it was a matter of homeland security. I still do not understand that one. It is ok for me to be inside the bouys if I am stopped against the wall, using a cast net or a sabiki, but the second I start pulling a plug, my boat and I are a threat. I think that it w

Do you mind sharing what you were trolling? Plugs, bucktails, live bait? Downrigger?
Thanks and I agree, it is totally assinine to allow bait catching and not fishing.

I’m trying to have a nice evening and not think about the idiots running our gov’t!
I troll mainly mirrolures. I used to troll nothing but stretch 25s, but I have never had to tune a mirrolure. They run true, even offshore at 7+ mph. I use solid pink, red head, blue and green mackerel colors. I tend to use the redheaded ones more for the striper. I run them very shallow.

I have a ton of mirrolures, as I mostly speckle trout fish. Are these the same size as the ones you speak of. I think mine are the 52Ms. Thanks again for the help.

i’ve had the santee cooper cops–thats what they probably were by the way-- mess with me many times since 9-11. $8.00 per hour security on a power trip.

The mirrolures I use are roughly the same size as the stretch 25s (~8"). The model is 111MR.

There was the guard, and then there was the LEO with a piece on his side and what looked like the Berkeley County patch on his shoulder. I have been dealing with the rent-a-cops for years now, and I don’t think this was one. He had the normal “utility” belt with all the fixins. What sucks, is that the fish are stacked up in there right now! They look really stupid trying to play the “security” card. If it was truly a security issue, then no one would be able to go in there. Like I said before, this is total discrimination…
Yeah, I am angry!!

It would have been more fun if we would have been able to fish. Oh well, is the dolphin blitz on yet??

I use to go trolling 2 years ago every weekend and i never got stopped. There were always atleast 10 boats out there at a time. What don’t make any since is that they let a bunch of boats in the locks everyday and they can have explosives. i don’t see what the big deel is.
I hate to say it, but they ought to make it an off limits area like the area below the dam. It sounds like Santee Cooper is playing DNR, not Homeland Security. What stops someone from locking up or down and having a pontoon loaded down with explosives? If “they” make it off limits, then where do alot of the guides catch there bait? Where do the bait shops catch their bait? Either make the area off limits for everyone or leave it alone…if someone is concerned about the stripers being caught, then change the regulations yet again, but what they are doing now is ridiculous. Alot of saltwater fishermen in the Cooper River are having issues fishing as well. Docks are suddenly private, despite the tide flowing to them and through them. We all continue to gripe and complain, including myself, as our freedoms and liberties as outdoorsman are taken away. I’d love to have five boats all together fishing up there and come away with tickets…in the process, contact the local news and stir the pot, excessively…have the van with lights and the camera on everyone and bring this to everyone’s attention…What would happen then? The only problem I have is that I don’t want to be made the example, not to mention when you get a bait permit you agree to only fish for “bait”.

hey i’m not a lawbreaker but i think i would have shown him he was #1 and just kept going - they cant shoot at you (legally) and i’m pretty sure he didnt want to swim -why is santee so heavily guarded - you can drive a boat right up to the clarks hill dam on both sides and if it goes its taking most of augusta with it - also been right up to the base of lake russel dam - sounds like a county issue to me - somebodys brother-in-law probably owns the security company thats being used[:0]
I just got off the phone with a friend who is a former congessman. He has a new position now that I will not disclose. He called a man that is basically 2nd in command in SC under the Governor. That man said it is total BS. He is in Washington right now, but he said that he would be contacting me very soon. He said if the bait boats are allowed in, we should all be allowed in. I hope he helps us all out. It doesn’t make sense to anyone. I think it doen’t make sense even to the dumb*** who came up with it…

sounds like new guards, what has changed, I have fished in there as you know the guards have come out looked at the sticker and waved us on. i’ve seen boats sitting even anchored or tied off to the ■■■■ fishing. not bait fishing unless they consider striper or cats bait . Oh and there is your answer you are bait fishing. Plus the bait fishing permits are free whose idea was that? A boat registration is all thats required. One mans bait is anothers meal. just saying what constitutes bait fishing. I agree with you this is BS and needs to be addresed. If they were serious about security it would be closed to all and they would have cops on the water. Them standing on the ■■■■ isn’t going to do anything except give them a close up view of the explosion. Another point those bouys are only about 50feet from the ■■■■ wall. I could anchor there and go subsurface to the ■■■■ set my charge and be back and gone. This whole thing is retarded. i’ll be calling my reps as well. Sorry you had a bad night Bro On the other hand those two striper are nice.
