Anyone know where/how i can catch my own herring/shad in Moultrie? Going after stripers which i believe are found at the dam and don’t want to have to drive my Carolina skiff across the lake to blacks to buy them. Trying to scan and throw just isn’t working for me and never has, no clue how people get that to work for them. Get there before day break and throw a light off the side to attract them? Any advice would be appreciated!
Water is too hot for herring to be sight casted, not to mention there isnt a huge population of herring in santee that is catchable. If there was Ned wouldnt catch them on murray/the hill/russell then drive them to santee…Shad/threads tend to not be in super open water. Get in the coves/pockets/creeks…there are usually tons of flips inbetween harrys and hwy45… they arent real big baits but will get the job done…i would be throwing a 3/8" mesh net to catch all sizes in this area. Watch for the flips (rain drops on the water) the bigger the flip or splash the bigger the bait…
Not sure if you will find any good bait areas around the dam…maybe up in the pinapolis arm in the very back. Bigger shad will be in the back or around docks…careful throwing around docks, many brush piles around. I dont throw on a dock that had rod holders on it, unless they also have a swim ladder, then only throw around the swim ladder (who puts a brush pile in front of a swim ladder )

Soooo it sounds like i either have to drive the boat to blacks, then drive it back down to Richardson’s landing to avoid driving over half of the lake. Then fish. Or gamble on blind netting the fish off structure. Does anyone drag bucktals or any other artificial? Besides umbrella rigs as i prefer to fight the fish naturally, not drag them in like a snagged stump? Hahaha thanks so much for the reply btw MM!
Knew a guy who used to really hammer the stripes at night by the dam with stretch 25s and 30s…but that was before 911 and the buoys they now have in place to keep you out of the “good fishing” areas…

Might try throwing your net under the lights on a pier before daylight, but use and old net first in case of brush piles! Good luck! Might try brim if you cant find shad!
Trolled Moultrie today, using 20 to 25 stretches and downrigger at 25 ft with roadrunners and did quite well off south side of Bonneau to the Navy area, …They seem to be pretty well scatterred along the steeper banks
Just a quick mention that while bass fishing today on Moultrie near Angels I saw three dead stripers floating, all undersized so probably caught and released. Hopefully the water will cool down soon.
Went out yesterday trying to find the stripers. I was drifting live herring all over the lake in various depths. Not so much as a bite. Saw very little activity on the fish finder. There was very little water flowing through the canal as well. Finally went up to the lower end of lake marion and was able to get a decent catfish. Do y’all think it’s still too warm for a lot of activity and schooling?
Others will probably disagree but I usually wait until mid November for stripers in or near the canal plus right now the water is about five degrees warmer than normal for the first week of October.
Ya I realize it’s hotter than normal so I’m thinking that is keeping the activity down maybe? And usually can catch them in the canal whenever there is good flow.
