Going out in a canoe with my dad next Wednesday. Neither of us are very experiences in the fresh water down here. Any tips would be very appreciated. Launching from the hatchery. Specific questions:
Is it still too early for top water bass action?
Would crappie be available to us without going too far? We’re canoeing, again.
What’s the best live bait and how should we fish it?
Probably still too early for topwater action. Others report catching nice crappie in shallow water. I would suggest minnows for live bait and for gods sake, please be carefull on the lake with a canoe. The water on moultrie can get rough at the drop of a hat.
Bass should be hitting plastic worms well now. Try either Green Pumpkin or June Bug trick worms. C-rig, T-rig or shakey head should all work now. Don’t play with the gators.
As for topwater, it may seem to go against the grain, but a technique that works this time of the year for BIG bites is a buzz bait fished VERY slow. You may not get a lot of bites, but you have a shot at a big female that’s moving in.
Key is fish it as slow as you can. Cavitron makes a good one you can fish very slow and still keep it on top.
Any luck out there? I thought about exploring out there one day. I can launch from short stay and it looks close to a lot of structure, but I’ve never been on that lake.
