After the little storm went through yesterday afternoon, launched near the elbow and headed to Hollow Creek to start trolling u-rigs. Carried a friend along for his introduction to umbrellas. The intent was to quickly troll through some favorite spots and if nothing was there, work our way east toward Bomb Island and Spence’s. Never made it out of Hollow Creek. Caught 9, kept 6. The smallest kept was 22.5". Wish we could have started earlier.
Sounds like a nice trip…I’ll take 6 keepers anyday…just being outthere makes it worth it…I admit I hate the Umbrella Rigs, but whatever works for you stick to it. I might have to try around Hollow Creek when I go Tuesday if we don’t pick up something near Goat first. God Bless, Coach B
Congrats on a good day.

You hate them because…
Hey sorry been moving this weekend and didn’t have time to reply. I just don’t like Umbrella rigs because I view them as harvesting fish rather then fishing. You don’t get the same fight. Catching a fish on an umbrella rig is like just tying a big weight on the end of your line and pulling it in. You might as well be hung up or have a catfish. I love seeing Striper jump and ■■■■■■■■■■ that’s why I go after them. Nothing like having a Striper hit top water…least not in freshwater. Anyhow I didn’t mean to offend you, but just saying what a good many of us think about them. Anyhow hope you got some this weekend. God Bless, Coach B

Coach, I’m not offended…I was just curious. I just thought “hate” was a pretty strong sentiment from you based upon my reading of most of your posts on this site.
Yeah I just think it defeats the purpose and takes away from the sport. To me you might as well be netting them, and that’s just not fishing for sport. Your right though I don’t hate much of anything, and someone else doing it doesn’t phase me…you just wont see me doing it. I guess it’s just a thing of preference. Anyhow did you get to go this weekend and if you did how did you do? God Bless, Coach Herring

Coach, I had a long reply written, but decided not to post it. It was too long and would not have changed your mind about u-rigs anyway.
Did not fish this weekend. Never intended to. Don’t like to fish weekends unless in the cold of winter when the boat traffic is less.
Food for thought. If umbrellas are such a sure thing, why don’t the tournament fisherfolks use them exclusively. I have never heard of a single tournament won by a team fishing exclusively with umbrella rigs. I believe anyone using artificials is at a distinct disadvantage to someone using live and/or fresh dead bait.
If you truly want sport, start flyfishing for stripers. I have and that is a hoot.
I’d love to fly fish, but three things stop me…one is price. Another is I don’t know how. I want to learn because I hear it’s awesome. Lastly it’s a lot of work and I fish for the relaxation and enjoyment of Gods creations. Anyhow you make a good point about Tournaments not being won just with U-Rigs, but that’s not the problem with them. It’s more so that you lose the fight that you get on live or other artificial. Anyhow have a great day. God Bless,
