Lake Murray boating questions...

I havent been to lake murray in years but i remember the water being clear and i am ready to get out of the salt water and try the lake.

I know it will be crazy this weekend but ready for a change of pace.

Any tips for boat landings

I don’t know much about the ramps, but it is a big lake. Do you have a preference on an area for ramps?

No i have no preference. I am coming from Charleston.

Also where are some good hangouts on the lake?? Ie sandbars or beaches or general anchoring spots?

You are brave, and I hope your boat can take some rough water. It turns into a washing machine out there on a holiday.

As far as landings, your best bet for coming from Charleston is the ScEG public landing at the dam. Get there early as it will be full by 11:00 or earlier.

A good beach spot is what we call Sandy Beach. It’s on the Lexington side of the lake right across from Bombing Island. Again, get there early and be prepared to double anchor your boat out in the water or raft up to someone.

You might be better off finding a cove and letting people jump off the boat. Be prepared to be buzzed by jet skis no matter where you go.

And also the Sheriff’s Dept. now has jet skis disguised as regular people. They can ticket you as they have jurisdiction on the lake and will be in high force this weekend for alcohol. We have had way too many people die on the lake on the holidays.

Any island will be a good hangout, but like Geronimo says it will be packed. Everywhere. I have been out there 1 time on the 4th. I have been in the harbor 1 time on the 4th. Both at night. I will never do either again. During the day the lake was very busy but it was way better than the harbor.

Wow thanks for the info!

Yeah maybe not the best weekend to explore so to speak but i definately want to get up there.

Sandy Beach looks like a cool spot.

Is the SCE&G ramp at the intersection of Hwy 6 and Hwy 60?

Early or never at the power co. area. Jakes is just down the road but probably no parking. My boat is on the trailer never ever on the 4th. Both counties & SCDNR will be out in full force looking for BUI they will be on the water and at the ramps. Too many fatal collisions in the last years.

How early is early?

SCEG has several ramps 6 and 60 is the main one. If you come this wknd, consider putting in off 391 in either the big or little Saluda. Ramps should be less crowded. Go upriver. Way upriver. Nice scenery. Come back down later and get some good food at Lake Shack or any of the other places up there, then venture on down-lake until the crowd gets on your nerves.

Where is Lake Shack?

yep, it will be a washing machine, ramps 3 & 4 are off Hwy 378 before the traffic circle, those are also good choices, put in there and stay ion that area or further up towards the river, be careful when leaving they always have a check point on Holley Ferry Rd

if you want ethanol free, they have it at the traffic circle, $3.90 last weekend

Guys, I am looking at going up this weekend. I am seriously considering camping at Dreher Island. Has anyone stayed there before?

I live about 10 minutes from Dreher and it is a very nice place. I think you would enjoy staying there. There are plenty of boat ramps, bathrooms, showers, a little store. There is non-e gas just up the road. Hope you have fun!
