On Saturday the Lexington high school will be having a swim across the dam. There will be lots of kids swimming and boats following them from the ramp to the Lexington side. Please be careful!

Put in at Jake’s Landing, then head up the lake-you should be fine. Sounds like the commotion will be close to the dam. You can buy herring at Better Bait, which is on the way to Jake’s (actually right up the road).
Did they need to get a permit for that? I mean, an open swim in Lake Murray is like playing in the road. I support school functions and kids having a fun time, but this seems a little scary. Maybe there’s a few details left out. RetiredGoFast - any more information you would like to share?
lmcleod They do the event yearly and it is supported from the water by DNR. They also surround the kids with support boats and canoes. Sorry for getting this info out late, my twin 12 year old daughters are on the Lexington High School swim team and they are raising money to build an indoor swimming facility for the kids.
I heard some Yahoo on a jet ski rode into the group a few years ago and was immediatley stopped and given a $500 fine.

The event is the 8TH ANNUAL DAM SWIM FOR DREW SMITH.
Members of the Lexington High Swim Team participated in the 8th Annual Dam Swim for Drew at Lake Murray.
The 1.5-mile swim honors the life of Drew Smith, an 11-year-old boy who was killed in a boating accident nine years ago.
“It’s just important to me that my son not be forgotten and this swim is one thing that keeps him in the public eye,” said Drew’s mother Karen.
Funds raised from Saturday’s swim will go toward building the Drew Smith Indoor Swimming Facility.

By the way, what ever happened with the story of the guy that ran over the pontoon boat about a month ago and killed that lady. I never heard anything else about it. ???
