As the sun went down over Charlotte Motor Speedway Sunday evening, we decided to go ahead and fish Monday. Got a little bit of a late start since I didn’t get home until late. We put 5 dozen herring in a bag and headed out for a little cutbait action. We anchored in 28’ of water off a main lake island since we marked a lot of fish both on the bottom and suspended off the structure in that depth. Ended up catching some but nothing of any real size. We moved over to another Island after a couple hours and anchored in 33’ with similar results. At that point the lake was full of boats and we called it a day. Our largest fish was 25-26". After some early success this year, the cutbait fish seem to be smaller than in recent years. Hopefully with the warming trend that’s coming the fish will push deeper and the “solid” cutbait fish will be easier to find.
On a side note, my son Tommy(5) has really come into his own. After basically “guiding” his brother and cousin on a successful shellcracker fishing trip to Wylie Saturday, he handled those stripers like a real pro yesterday. It won’t be long before he is telling me where and how we need to be fishing.
Shawn,
The reason you did not catch any Monday was because I gave them all sore lips Sunday night. lol! Actually that was NOT the case! I had my youngest daughter and wife out for my first night outing of of the year. We launched around 7:30 and marked lots of fish in the lower pool but could not get any good bites…only short strikes which I think were small fish trying to eat huge herring. Caught one short fish before dark. Now the good news…I just put some new underwater LED’s on my boat and wanted to see how or if they would attract bait. I was very impressed with the amount of herring that were stacked around my transom. Only managed two more shorts before the wife and daughter got cold but still a good night on the lake. Here is a pic of the lights while my boat was on plane…

They are called Lumitec SeaBlaze3. I looked at many reviews and talked to a good friend who installs both Ocean LED and Lumitec and the SeaBlaze seems to be brighter and cost less:smiley: If you want a bright good quality LED you are going to have to pay for them. I tried some cheaper brands made in China and they are a waste of your $$.

They make a bar that attaches to the Trim Tabs but I when with the through hull. Had to drill a 1/2 inch hold for the wire and the back of the light. Was a little nervous at first but with some high quality marine sealant in the hole and on the back of the light its all good! I will take some pics when I get around to it…
