Lake Murray Reports

Ok, I know a bunch of you had to be out, lets hear some reports. I need to figure out what I’m doing wrong. I just can’t seem to catch fish in January.

I fished mid lake Saturday 6:30 till 1:30 and Sunday from 1:30 till 6:30 and only caught one largemouth. Fished from Hollow creek to Rocky creek. Fished water from 80’ to 3’ from the main lake to the backs of creeks. Water started out 41* saturday morning and I read as high as 48* back in a cove. Main lake was 45* to 46* when I left. I marked some good concentrations of fish out in the main lake but by the time I got lines in they were gone. Luckily I seem to do better in February as the water warms. I might have to switch to perch fishing in January.

Handful on flies(some keepers/some not), when I can go. My better fish have been from 10’ to 15’+. Think small and slow with artificials…I don’t fish bait. Dreher up.

Good luck.

I haven’t even tried this season. I know some guys do well, but I’ve never been able to figure out the winter striper fishing on Murray…or the Spring, Summer or Fall now that I think about it.

But, at least during other parts of the year I can be out there in a T shirt, shorts and flip flops while trying…drinking a beer that is in a coozie to keep it cold, not to keep it from freezing up.

4 stripers, one keeper and a few greenies to boot. All 15’ or deeper on a grey/white coyote fly in Big Hollow.

RK, sounds like you got that fly fishing down pretty good. Even the small ones gotta be a blast on a fly rod. What’s the biggest striper you’ve caught on a fly rod?

Still get skunked some days this winter(water is too cold and sometimes they are marked, but won’t eat a fly). I am living and dying with the fly this Fall and Winter, making me learn/understand Murray in a different way than just trolling u-rigs like I used to. Largest is 12#(fly) on Murray and slightly larger on Clarks hill behind the Russell Dam.
