Lake Murray Trophy

So I took two a couple co-workers out on Friday for a half day fishing trip. Neither have done much striper fishing which made running 6 PB’s, 4 FL’s 2 DR’s and a cork rather complicated . The weather was very overcast and quite windy. The fish were plentiful but the bite was slow. We managed 4 keepers in the first couple hours with the largest being 24 inches. We moved twice before leaving the fertile grounds of tight lipped fish to another spot I am fond of this time of year. We got the spread out again with the wind still wipping alot harder than I prefer, when one of my 7’6" rods doubled over (actually trippled over…can that happen??). I grabbed the rod and could barely get it out of my Driftmaster Duo. Still ripping drag off my reel I was able to go over and under three FL’s to the opposite side of the boat where I actually realized how loaded the rod was. I knew it was a good one but quickly passed the rod to the lucky fisherman on my left. With some good coaching he fought the monster for close to 5 minutes until we got her to the boat and WOW what a fish! I got her in the net and brought her aboard Landlocked and we all just starred at her beauty! We took several nice pics and I put her back into the 67 degree water and after a couple breaths and three or four large sweeps of her tail she slipped out of my grasp and dissapeared into the clear blue water before our eyes. As quickly as she boarded she was gone to fight another day! I kinda wish I would not have passed the rod since this fish would have doubled my personal best on Murray… but at least I can say I have a new boat record that will be hard to top. My scales were not on the boat however I am confident she was close to 30 lbs. I have one mounted on my wall that is 28 and she was every bit the size if not more. Maybe one day I will get the opportunity to catch one like this and get a replica mount! Everything in this post should tell you how I was fishing except the depth and that was 27 feet.

BAYAAAAM!!! Looks like you were fishing the same area I was. I guess the fog was just a little darker last Friday than the Friday before, crazy weather these days, LOL. Congrats on the nice fish. I’ve been dying to get back out after getting a good one last week but the weather just won’t cooperate for me. It’s awesome seeing these bigger fish getting caught!!!

Nice fish Richie!!

Congrats Richy…

I went out Friday afternoon and we struggled. The wind was really rough and it severely limited where we could fish.

Like you said, marked a bunch of fish but they were tightlipped.

Unfortunately I dont have good luck and therefore we didnt get a big one like you!

Really nice fish, Richy. I think it’s great hearing about all the really nice fish being caught out of Murray this year. I just hope it’s not all weather related. I’m getting tired of being blown around.

Nice fish!! Thats 30 plus. To many Hook hrs on that boat!!

Holly cow!! I mean holly striper!!! Congrats Richy! Beautiful striper…

Thanks for the report Richie. The big fish sure let you know early in the fight, don’t they…lol Glad you decided to send her back to get bigger. Hopefully I can get out this week with some of these jumbo herring in my tank…

If you’ve had fun catching fish on the transom bait, you are welcome…

I’ve spent about 85% of my life’s wages on fishing, the rest I just wasted…

Nice Richy! Though it’s tough to tell from a photo, it sure looks better than 30 to me! Simply a beautiful fish!
