Lake Murray Turn Over

Went over the dam this morning and the water looked kind of dark. Checked the charts and it looks like the cold and wind triggered the turn over. Will this send the fish way up? What part of the lake do you usually fish when it turns over? I struggle this time every year.

Where’d you get the data from?

it’s my Wife’s fault we HAVE to fish now!!!

Thats awsom, never seen this chart before! What lakes can you pull up like that?

SteelyTom…I started striper fishin’ Murray back in the late 70s and this time of year has always been a bugger…it’s like they scatter all over and clam up for a while…but then the water temp starts gettin’ close to 60 and they turn on…or that’s been my story…haven’t spent enough time on Murray lately, but been goin to Hartwell while stripes made a comeback in the Saluda…
Any bigger fish comin outta Murray lately?..

Thanks Reel,
The fishing was excellent all of September and the first part of October. I was getting a good many fish in the 26 to 28 inch range. Nothing giant, but good numbers of keepers. I lost one that was about 15# at the boat. It was the best few weeks I’ve had since the fish kills a few years ago.

Reel, nothing like years ago, but back in Sept Lake World weighed in some upper teens and 20+ lb’ers. I watched a guy reel in a 26 lb’er back in June while we were catching bait at the towers, so there’s still some around.

I can’t ever seem to do any good either right after the lake flips. I don’t really know, but I’ve always assumed that with the temp and DO level being so uniform throughout the water column, they just scatter all over. Looks like calm winds and about 70 for highs this weekend, so I’m definately gonna give it a try…just clueless as to where to even start.

I’ve never been able to figure out what depth they are calling 'Bottom" on the graphs…does anyone know?

OMG - look what the cat dragged in! Ya’ll need to come up to High Rock and help me figure it out.

It ain’t no mystery…this beer’s history!

I’m going to head out after work tonight. To nice of a night to not try. Even if the fish won’t bite. I am pretty sure that the sensors for those graphs are on the towers.

The fish kills you mention are what lead me down to Hartwell…although it sounds like I need to get back down to Murray…winter’s always the best…and it’s just around the corner…got a 34 lber from the 2nd cove inside the Gap back then…kinda hooked me worse than the fish…

OK…Thanks…

Went out on Murray last night after work and never had a single hit. I fished from Ballentine down to the dam. Spent most of the time searching. Never saw more than a couple random, scattered fish.

Thanks for the report…I’m gonna give it a try late this afternoon/evening…guess I’ll try a little farther up the lake.

The charts are really interesting. You can pinpoint the hour on the 19th that the lake turned over. Also interesting to see what happened with dissolved oxygen. Not much impact on the surface but a big infusion of oxygenated water deep. How long can we expect poor fishing to persist?

Admittedly it’s been a while since I’ve fished Murray, but we used to spend lots of time watching what the bait fish do…match the hatch…in location and size…presenting 8" herring when they’re zoned in on 2" shad probably ain’t gonna produce…sometimes ya gotta drop down on hook size and use crappie-sized shiners…

Well then - I guess this is a good time for my boat the break … had a fuel fitting at my gas tank break off … replaced it and now I’m getting air into my lines somehow - boat runs but I can’t get it over 26MPH/3800 RPM … which is about half of what I know my 150HP Yamaha can do … guess I can spend the time replacing fuel lines and primer pumps but my Wife is gonna be all over my ass to fix it so I can get her back out on the water catchin’ more fish … (**() - I hate my Honey Do list …

1 - Fix the boat
2 - prep the boat for fishing
3 - Check the forum
4 - hook up the boat
5 - buy bait
6 - Take my Wife fishing!!!
7 - Make sure I don’t miss my Wife’s fish with the net
8 - Setup the cleaning station for my Wife (she cleans the fish )
9 - Cook the fish (if my Wife doesn’t want to)
10 - Repeat the following day

Anybody got a better list???
