lake murray - up lake discussion

headed up lake this weekend. can anybody out there help out? i typically buy herring from better bait or lake world near the dam, but that’s a good drive from there to the up lake ramps. has anyone bought bait from the bait shops at the circle where 378 and 391 meet? how about that new spinners place?

any help/tips would be greatly appreciated.

oh yeah… for those in the tourney, we aren’t fishing it so your safe to share.

thanks! phishinphan.

the new marina is suppose to have bait now.i’ll get mine from big mans.i’lluse shiners.they seem to live longer.where are you going to put in at?what time are you going?

we haven’t decided any of that. either acapulco or up further in little river (south side of lake)

i don’t think we’ll get out there till early afternoon and fish the sunset - evening bite.

that is, if the MSC tourney guys leave any stripers for us.

where is big mans? shiners eh, aren’t they a little small?

big mans is past the traffic circle(378 and 391 meet) on 391 towards prosperity.the shiners are large $6 a dozen.i have good luck with them.90 percent of my fish are caught using shiners but to each his own.i can also buy them at big mans.i plan on being out a daybreak the morning bite has always been better to me.

you fishin in the tourney? lines wet at 7.

big shiners eh… hmmm… the one’s we got last time i went fishing were maybe 3-4"

i’m not fishing the tourney.i got out of msc last year.it got in the way of my saltwater fishing in the summer and fall.i hope the shiners are bigger than 3-4 inches.i haven’t bought any this year.this is actually the first trip of the year.

got it. i’ve not joined the club yet, but i probably will. i’ve never been offshore so it certainly won’t get in the way of that.

the one’s we got were from dooley’s sport shop about a month ago or more. the average length was maybe 3" or so, but they were feisty as hell and lived a long time.

I put in at spinners today…got there at 7 am …there was a note…be back at 9…drove around a little looking for bait…no luck . When they did open …Spinners does have a really nice live bait set-up (herring and shad). I fished from bouy 21-23 on the south side and marked a lot of fish…cuaght 0 ( 1 break off) trolling large shad behind planer boards and 1 downline(maybe the smaller shiners would do better)…I saw a guy catch 2 small ones trolling a chartuse umbrella

The more you fish, the better you lie.

How is the water on the lakes? Still very low / the strippers have got to be tearing it up…

An unchallenged LIE would soon become the truth…

It’s still low, and I have not heard of anyone doing much. Seems kind of slow compaired to Moultrie and Wateree. I am heading out tomorrow afternoon and evening to fish in the rain, cold and wind.

Fished artificials around the forks yesterday afternoon(Fri. the 14th). Nothing until about an hour before dark. Bass, perch, and stripers started feeding on top, but were very finicky. Did pick up 3 stripers,a bass, and a perch. Missed about a half dozen or so. Talked to a bud who had been out all day with herring. They only had two shorts to show for it and packed up about the time the fish started to show up.

what did you catch them on ?

We ended up going out even though the weather was bad. We got to the little river marina at 3:30 and stayed until we saw lightning at about 7:00. With wind we had were limited as to where to fish. We never had a hit and only saw a handfull of fish on the fish finder. But we were in 15’ of water or less 95% of the time. Oh well, hopefully weather will cooperate a little better next time out.
