Check out the striper section of this forum, lots of stripers are being caught on live herring and big spoons in the big water down the lake. They have a summer law of keeping the first 5 fish you catch no matter the size and go home! There are many place that sell live herring if you have a tank. Good luck!
Thanks
both of these help.
I’ve been out on Murray quite a bit lately. Feel free to PM me if you are up here.
BTW, how long is it acceptable to use a screen name like “Justretired” before you have to chang it to “Retired”?

Labor Day weekend last year we stayed at Dreher Island State Park. The cove across from our campsite every morning had stripers blowing up shad/herring on the surface. The action would last till about 9:30 am. Went over there with a buddy who’d never thrown top water plugs before and we had a blast. I caught my first striper on first cast. We were throwing spooks (bone and reed/white-my redfish goto’s). Good luck
Use a 3000 series reel, 20# braid, 12# flouro leader… Lures: Red Eye Shad, Jitterbug, Beetle Spin, blue or black plastic worm texas style… work the banks and catch bass, bream and crappie no problem! Most of my fishing is done at Lake Murray.

You don’t have to keep them, but once you catch 5 (per person) you’re supposed to quit fishing for stripers. This time of year I usually keep them because of the heat & the deep water they’re coming from.
