Tide,
Do you have any suggestions on winter fishing. I’ve had no luck with them in the winter. I’ve been using downrods from Big Gap up to Black’s and have worked some birds last two trips. They seem to be spread out in the winter. I’ve gotten reports on catches around Goat Island lately, thought they were in the upper lake this time of year?? Can’t wait until the summer, and just a few more weeks and they should be running the Congaree. Hope to see ya out sometime, when I’m not on the big pond!
we caught our fish in deep water (50 feet) near humps that came up to about 15 feet. all the fish but one were caught feelineing herring. we were only about 3 miles up the lake from dhrer island. we marked fish and bait in the area and started fishing. it was kinda slow a hit about every 45 minutes or so.

Old Riser, the only months I have not caught fish on the lower end were Dec and Jan. That might be because I am usually duck hunting. It seems the fish do something different every year, but the last few years before the drawdown we caught alot of fish in Feb and March trolling buck tales in 20 or so feet. Try to cover alot of area and stick to the grass. When you get a hit work that area real good. We even drop the trolling motor sometime and cast the area. If you pick up a few then throw a striper swiper, usually a bigger fish will take it. It seems like this time of year they are almost wanting to bust the surface. Maybe with the water up this will be a good pattern. Their tuff to figure sometimes. Don’t assume that they have moved up lake. And keep at it. Drop me a line and we’ll trade some reports. Oh yeah, around Goat might be good. Its seems like the water warms up sooner around Balentine. Good luck!
The Ballentine area rocks. When the water is normal it is a great area to fish. In late April, early May pull freelines through the creek where Lighthouse marina is. You won’t be dissapointed.
I’m ready to go after work. Anybody need a tag along?
I have a nice boat too, but only drag it out to Murray/Wateree on weekends.
I also have a portable 30gal round bait tank to put some herring in if anyone wants to have me pick some up and meet you out somewhere after work during the week.
KEEP ME ON YOUR LIST if you need a hook-up!

By the way, GLAD to see this forum here on CF.com.
Just so y’all know, there is a pretty good site dedicated to striper fishing by a guy that is sharing a LOT of knowledge: http://www.striped-bass-fishing.com/bboard/
Thanks for all the info. guys. The good season is just around the corner, so I’ll try to remember all this info. next winter. Hope to be doing some offshore fishing(trolling) this spring and summer on the good forecast days.
That’s right. Another few weeks and I wouldn’t trade a box full of Dolphin for all the stripers in L.M… But I still try to fish the lake during the week to wash all the salt out of the boat. It’s just hard to fit it all in with a family now. Good luck!
