going up next week to give it a try–have only fished it twice in the past with little success-both times were in feb of last year–not looking for any specific spots but was hoping for some info on it-mainly which arm (rocky rvr-savannah rvr -beaverdam creek) i should start looking for them-my instincts tell me the savannah since it cooled off first and im thinking the bait would go to that --i know anybody that fishes this lake is very protective over it for good reason -i wont be keeping any thing but the bait stealing spots the linesides will be in the picture alblum and released to fight another day-- thanks for any help
I would hit Clarkes Hill instead of Russell. Lake Russell is a hard lake to fish. I saw hybrid popping the top on the Savannah River about 3 miles below the Lake Russell (**() on Clarkes Hill side. Be careful though, the water is really low… Stay on the Georgia side and ride the channel.
yeah i know its a hard lake to fish-guess thats why i wanna fish it- i’m getting to the point where i would rather spend a whole day trying to catch a 20# than a day pullin in 6-8#ers–been fishing the hill for a long time and can pretty consistently catch em there - there is just a better average of larger fish on russell-- i’ve got a freezer full of hill hybrids–just wanna get a couple of good fights and would love to see my fishing partner get a hold of a 20+ --i got him hooked with the hill hybrids this spring but havent been able to pull up anything over 15# in the hill in the past couple years
well with it being a nice day and my chores done i jumped on the bike and headed north – its amazing how much of the lake you can see with a good map and a pair of binocs ! saw a little activity–gotta figure out how to strap a striper rod to the bike next time i do that!
Gonna try Russell? I would have no idea where to start unless I spent a whole week or had a local point me in the right direction. I hear it’s a fling and prayer, but if you do hook up, … COW TIME!!! Let us know how you do if you try it.
yeah i figure thats one of 2 choices i have -either learn russell or murray-- the hill looks terrible-boat ramps outta the water everywhere-its a challenge just launching the boat- saw a 25 and 30#er get pulled out of a school right in front of me last feb on arigs on russell–i know they are in there --didnt have a arig in the boat and they wouldnt hit anything else we threw at em --ill let yall know next week how we did–but dont expect much and nobody will get disappointed
I went to the hill about a month ago and pulled the boat from Savannah Lakes to Calhoun Falls looking for a boat ramp. Finally put in on the little river at the 378 bridge and had to ride all the way up. I did put in at Elisha Clarke the next day but it’s still a long ride. I may have to ride to Russell, I love the scenery on that lake but not a lot of luck fishing it. Had some luck with the large mouths in the spring but never tried the striper. Let us know how you do.
well after a day of fighting wind -retying lines (from trees) --and pulling in a boatload of greenies (dang baitstealers)–the white fish won learned a lot-gonna try it again this coming week–i’m payin my dues! didnt figure this was gonna be easy!
Keep at it! It will be worth it in the long run!You have to do your homework before you get a good grade. Hope you wil share your education with us! Good luck
