I hope it waits past that 1st week. I’m taking a little mini vacation starting the 2nd, and am planning to rent a place on the lake for three days. You know, fish, drink beer, fish, eat, fish & drink more beer, nap & repeat. Just me and Porkchop.

crobbins,
Since you’re new around here, use the “Search” function with “Lake Turnover” as the topic to see what these characters are getting prepared for- it’s the hot topic EVERY year, with opinions being thrown around in every direction.
All in good fun I might add…normally.
Go ahead and take a stab at it. Your guess is as good as anybody’s.
I’ll kick it off. Nov 19th

Almost like a “mini” turnover with that rain a week back. The water had that look, but no smell and debris

when you’re fishing in 5 ft of water, the turnover won’t have any effect on you anyway…

If you’ve had fun catching fish on the transom bait, you are welcome…
I’ve spent about 85% of my life’s wages on fishing, the rest I just wasted…
Maybe i just don’t fully undestand what the turnover effects and does not effects…could someone explane some of these effects … I know the water mixes or turnover"s and that is about all for me…
I’m certainly no hydrologist, but here’s how I understand it. When the warmer surface waters cool and allow the warmer bottom waters to rise and mix, a lot of sulfuric gases are released in the upper layers. When the turnover occurs, the taste of drinking water is slightly off and the lake smells. It takes a couple to several days for wind and other currents to rectify this situation that throws off the bite. When the wind cleans things up, the lake is no longer stratified with regard to temperature and dissolved oxygen, and the fish are able to roam where they please. The bite is back on, and the seasonal migration upriver and in creeks begins in full for stripers.

I agree with most of what by buddy says, except the gases are not sulfuric (which is a strong acid), but instead the gas is hydrogen sulfide, commonly referred to as sewer gas because of its rotten egg smell. Hydrogen sulfide is formed by the decay of organic (plant) matter, which is why there is no oxygen at the bottom of the lake in the summer. This decayed organic matter rises to the surface when the lake turns over, which accounts for the water being stained, until the wind mixes it and it settles back to the bottom or is drained to the river below the dam.

Thanks for the clarification buddy! Leave it to a retired chemical engineer to set us straight.

Sceg may have done some maintenance, not sure but looked like the lake tried to do something friday night but then there was a period of no observations sat morning. And everything went back to the way it was. Guessing flawed data or maintenance.
