Anybody fish any of the Radius Reels? Heard the reels ran a little small. I have a Velocity and have been very happy. Thanks

Decent reel. Bought some when they were discontinued at a great price. In fact, I bought three so that I would have parts (haven’t needed so far) and interchangeability of frames/spools. They are a little on the wide and shallow side (a la large arbor fad) but not too bad. Occasionally if I’m not paying attention I get line build up on one side that jams the spool against the frame. It’s the price you pay for a reel with a large outer diameter, a large arbor and the attempt to preserve backing capacity (they make it wider to do this).
Of note, there was a design change a few years back (maybe 3 years before they were discontinued). I still see some of the older frames for sale “as new.” You’ll probably read about the rusted clutch bearings on the net. I think the newer stainless clutches accompanied the newer frames so I stayed away from the older ones.
All in all, I’d buy them again no questions asked. I’ll prob buy some more at some point. You can find them in the $135 range on the net.

I have had one for 10 years, and it is still kicking. I recommend them for a cheap reel, especially at the price below!

Poked around a little because I was looking at getting a 3.5 due to sales. I already own a 1.5 and it looks a little wide. The Radius 3.5 has 3.5" dia., and the Velocity 3.5 has a 3.85" dia. Both have the same capacity of 200 yrds of 20#, according to web.

My 3.5 velocity seized up 2 years ago after 3 years of salt and mud (always rinsed) in the kayak. I contacted Lamson and they were very nice. Had me send it in at no charge and changed out the bearings to the new stainless ones. Not a problem since. Great customer service and a decent reel.

Guys,

Been reading the site for a couple months now trying to learn as much as possible. Im new to saltwater fly fishing and try to get down to charleston alot (live in Charlotte). Ive got the the velocity 4 on an orvis clearwater II 8 wt. I know the 4 is built for 10 and 11 wt rods, but I recieved this as an xmas present and was just happy enough to start rippin lips on flats. I had luck landing my first fish a couple weeks ago, so im not sure if i need to downgrade on my reel. I guess Im just looking for opinions on my setup from some seasoned salts. Appreciate it.
