Landing large fish

I was reading some of the discussions on here and saw someone mention he was fishing with amatures who were trying to set the hook while fishing offshore. Having little to no experience with off shore fishing can someone tell me the technique? If one is not setting the hook what should one do when you get a bite? Thank you for the help!

It really depends on what you are talking about, but generally with circle hooks you never set the hook. The technique can vary depending on what species, but if you are talking about trolling with J-hooks, you have to realize that when your boat is moving at 6knts in one direction and the fish hit’s it at 30knts going in the other direction that a pretty good “hook set” has already been done. Essentially your goal from that point is to keep slack out of the line. Keep the line nice and tight with a slight bend in the rod and you will land most of them.

Thanks for the information. Saved me some frustration!
