Laptop Battery Replacement

My son’s laptop needs a new battery. It is an HP and no longer holds much of a charge so I am looking for a new one. I see a ton of different batteries available. What should I be looking for? I know mAh means milliamp hours and the higher the better but, some are 6 cell and some are 12 cell. Any guidance from our resident computer folks (or battery folks) would be much appreciated.

Thanks,

Batteries + on Two Notch replaces pretty much all my battery needs anymore. They cost a few dollars more, but their warranties are excellent. My boat battery died after 2 years and they gave me 1/2 what I paid for it.

I bought a battery on line for mine …was half the price of office stores and had a one year warranty. Mine was 42.95. Will look up address for you.

If you are not concerned about the weight you can go with the 12 cell. But is probably came with the 6 cell so save money and weight. I have found you get what you pay for with batteries. If you get a really cheap one it will not hold a charge for long, if you go with something equivalent to OEM then you are good. Batteries Plus has some good stuff, eBay has some that are not so good.
On another angle, does the laptop stay in place, does it ever travel? If is doesn’t ever move, will it run without the battery, some do, some don’t? My Laptop on my coffee table never moves and I do not keep a battery in it. A lot of newer laptops will not run without the battery in place, just a thought.

Bought a 12 cell for mine on amazon and it holds a charge for way longer than it did when new. Look on amazon and read the reviews for different batteries.

I’d also make sure that your battery is being charged probably…what I mean by that is make sure you don’t have a short in the connection from the power cord to the computer. This could ruin your batter as well.

Thanks for all the input, found a good OEM battery with a 3 year warranty online. It is replacing one that is about 3 years old.
