Laptop Hard Drive

Looking at laptops and have been reading a lot about solid state drives. Any good reason to discount a standard hard drive in lieu of a solid state drive?

The heck with that! Will Windows 7 stuff, transfer over to Windows 10 with no loss of stuff:question:

2 questions… what are you using the laptop for and how big is the drive?

Capt, if that was a question for me? Just browsing the net/email/bill pay/pictures/porno! Just the usual stuff!

Im no expert but ssd’s are nice and durable but still a bit small and expensive. Unless you move your computer around a lot while its open I think there is little risk to hurt a standard drive. I’m relatively rough with my laptops and never had a standard drive go bad on me since my first laptop 10 years ago. That’s with tons of use and mountain biking to class.
Fyi
Lenovo ThinkPad 06. Slow machine had a backlight and fan go bad. Trashed due to performance.
Dell insperon I believe, around 2010. Years later the fan or mother board went bad. As it was about time to switch I did. Good computer.
Toshiba Satellite 2014. $400 2.5ghz i3 processor, came with mouse, case, and flash drive. Love this computer. Basically nothing to complain about.

First, Most, Biggest

My apologies… I was directing that towards Dfreedom, but to answer your question, there has been some issues with applications not running in 10 where they would run in 7. Microsoft Music was one app that I think puked on itself. Had something to do with the licensing I think. I don’t think you have to worry about stored files transferring over.

The SSD’s do have advantages…faster boot times( due to no moving parts) and are extremely durable. You generally do not have to worry as much about fragmentation like you would with a typical hard drive. If you are on the go with your laptop, like field service work, and want to spend extra money… then you wont be disappointed. If it is just a home PC and general browsing/email/fishing forums, etc. then I wouldn’t really worry about.

Get the SSD, will be much faster. I’ve replaced several HDDs with SSDs and it’s a noticeable difference.

they are getting cheaper. Saw 500gb for $135 or so this week. Boot time, durability with drops, and speed for laptops which generally are hardware limited, are all wins.

Looking for replacement for a college student. It will be hauled around a good bit. I know they are faster/more durable. He has an external HD to back stuff up on.

Go SSD
I did the same for Andrew’s machine he carries around Clemson. It boots by the time you take your finger off the start button.
He has 500Gb not likely to fill it up any time soon

Boat drinks, Waitress I need 2 more boat drinks!

Most people think of “CPU” when they think of speed, but you would likely notice more of a performance boost from the SSD drive and RAM… SSD drive is WAY FASTER than HDD. The only reason that they aren’t the standard now is because of cost.

Thanks, now I just have to decide what brand. Too many choices.
