It appears that I, and some of the BARF Kayak Fishing Club members, are going to be taking a road trip this weekend down to the 'Goon, and camp Sat night on one of the islands… Plans are to arrive and launch around 0900 Sat, and fish sat/sun as much as possible.
If anyone is interested in joining us, for fishing, camping or both, let me know… Weather looks to be perfect… Lows in the 40’s-50, highs in the low 70’s, NO winds to talks about (<5 knots).
This is our first road trip, and is a precursor to future trips to the Keys, Choko, and other parts of Florida and the South East.
Did you get the email with the info on this? Looks like 3-5 of us already heading out… Fishing is supposed to be hot right now for Reds and Seatrout too…
Been studying it for an hour, Awesome! Try and keep this on the “down-low”, Next time I get one of those days off, with no pay… Mud and I are heading south.
I buy an annual non-resident license every year, since I go down 2-3 times a year to fish… Often for a week at a time.
Not a problem though, since you can dial 1-888-347-4356 or 1-888-486-8356 and buy one online, that is good instantly (They give you a number that you can give to a Law Enforcement Officer as proof of licensing), with a credit card.
Florida and Alaska are two of the most Angler Friendly States in the country, and both have similiar programs…
where is mosquito lagoon ? …and how did ya’ll do ?
The more you fish, the better you lie.

It is 15 mile North of Cape Canaveral, in Florida. We did OK given the little time we actually got to fish and explore the area…
Given the conditions: A day after a hard freeze, and water almost 2 feet below full pool, not bad.
Total caught: 4 Catfish and a small Stingray. We did see one school of Redfish… When we had less than an hour before we had to head back… They were spooky and didn’t want our baits… As we broke camp, I had a live finger mullet out in about 5 feet of water and something took it and bent my heavy action rod double and stripped some line… When I went to set the hook, nothing. I suspect it was either a large bull red, or a large stingray, since the mullet had no teeth marks and was still alive.
Saw a Nice 20+" Seatrout caught by another angler near where we camped, and a school of probably a couple hundred Sheepshead… All the larger ones had lock jaw, but the smaller ones were more than willing to steal bait…
We are planning on going back several more times this year, as the whole trip is real cheap, the campsite is awesome, and the fishing has alot of potential… When the water is warmer and higher…
I Pm d you earlier but could you send me the info on the camp site and any other advice for a trip like that you care to share. Does the camp groud have a boatramp? dock? any advice about the fishing would be appreciated. Thanks glad yall had fun going to try to trailer down the skiff for a similar trip.

As for the fishing there… I didn’t get enough time really learn the lay of the land… It being a day after a freeze and with the water down about 2’ from full, learning was hampered even more.

Choko is nice too, there are problems there with parking though… Unless you know someone… I have been down there twice in the last year, and loved it both times…
We used to slay fish in ML and IRL back in college. That place is a kayak fisherman’s dream. Yall wouldn’t believe some of the days we had out there: tailing fish from dawn to dusk, baby tarpon on the flats, and bulls schooled up in crystal clear water in the IRL. Here’s one of the pigs from a good fall day fishing the big schools.
Next time any of yall go, hit me w/ a PM and I’ll give ya some tips on kayak fishing that area.
Fished those areas myself for 15 yrs living in Titusville. Those are some of the best red/trout waters I’ve ever fished. If you get into some of the backwater creeks off of Haulover canal you’ll find some monster trout and snook. North of Haulover bridge on Hwy 3 a couple of miles there is a creek with some 15+ deep water that the fish will stack up in on those cold winter days. You can catch 'em right from the bank. Tip if you go…look for the tiny fenced graveyard on the west side of the road and follow the dirt road/trail. You’ll find it.
