Hello gents. This is my first post. My bro-in-law just moved to Mt Pleasant and we are plotting a trip for this fall. I am a kayaker and he is more of a surf/pier guy (so far ). I am scoping old entries from last fall and interested in what to expect species-wise. Looks a lot of reds (which is exciting of course) - should I expect flounder or trout to be around that time of year?
I’ve fished for reds in FLA, NC with some success, using paddletails of varying colors. Are there other go to baits for inshore you all would recommend around charleston?
I am excited to fish new water - thanks for any â– â– â– â– â– â– â– â– !
Fall is my favorite time of the year to fish; Trout, flounder and big redfish. I usually catch trout and flounder on accident while fishing for redfish, but they are plentiful in the fall. I like to use Zman baits, specifically the diezel minnowZ, ShrimpZ, and paddlerZ. Can’t go wrong with live fingermullet or shrimp though.

thanks redfish4! sounds great!
My bro-in-law lives around mt pleasant. I was also looking around Folly beach and can see that those are kind of far apart. Do you guys have a suggestion for a weekend base of operations that might be handy for both kayak and surf? How’s the fishing around bowen’s island - looks like close to folly beach? I’ll check out the zman baits - thanks for the info.

checked out the zman baits. Silly me I thought diesel was a color:smiley:!
I’ve had pretty good success with chartreuse / silver at other locales, as well as clear / silver sparkle, and rootbeer’s been recommended in the past. Looks like lots of options in terms of sizes and colors. I typically fish 1/4 oz jighead - looks kind of like jigheadz, trouteye jigheadz cross. same make sense where you all are?

I usually stick with those general colors as well…rootbeer, pearl/glow, chartreuse, silvers, greys, off set whites, and really anything that resembles a mullet. Two really good colors Zman offers that I catchy the majority of my fish on are Redbone and Pinfish. Ralphs’s shad is also a very good color. I will usually have two rods rigged up. One with a quarter ounce jig head (usually trout eye) with a paddle tail/ diezel MinnowZ or anything I can throw and cover a lot of water with. I will have another one rigged with a Zman shrimp or crab on a 4 ought gamagatzu weighted flutter hook to throw at any fish I see cruising, tailing, finning , or crashing bait. I do not have much experience fishing folly, but I bet there are still plenty of good flats and creeks you can explore with the kayak. If the surf isn’t too rough, you could even think about launching and fishing 100 yds off from the beach for some big redfish… Fall is the Primetime for big redfish and a lot of people have had success off of Folly. I’ll take a look on google maps and PM you some areas that look good around Bowen’s island

thanks for the info about color choices and rigging. Good stuff. I’ve not fished the crabz before, so that’ll be fun. I’ve settled on the Gamakatsu hooks too, after trying a few others. Seem to get a better hookup. appreciate he response and reminder about fishing off the beach. I tried that a little last fall around Carolina beach. Hoping for a bluefish pod and after catching a couple small sharks, one surfaced about 30 yards away (love it when a plan comes together). Hooked up for 30 seconds of drag screaming fun before it broke/bit off. I’ve started using 40# fluorocarbon leader, in front of 8-10 lb braid.
