Late report 5/24

Left late around 6 and headed to edisto banks. Were going to be pushed for time to start with due to wedding that night. Looked for clean water and didnt find any till we were 4 miles short of the banks. started dropping lines in at 8 and had the spread running good in 5 minutes. Looking back to make sure spread is right and wahoo crushes the left outrigger. After fighting the fish for 15 minutes he on the side of the boat. Everything from here on is a blur. The next thing I know our gaff man brings the fish over the gunwale and trips. He ends up half in the fish box with the wahoo on top of him. At first inspection it looked like he was not hurt till he lifted his hand. Next thing I know it is time to bring in lines and haul a@# to the hospital. The wahoo had taken about a 1/2 dollar size chunk out between the fingers. Luckly it was not worse because it could have been real bad.

Total for the day:
20 minutes of fishing
1 wahoo (55lbs)
100 gallons of fuel
15 stitches ($500 doctor bill)
And a thank you to who ever was watching over us because it could have been worse!!!

glad yall made it back and everything turned out well

strip…strip…FISH ON!

That’s about $33/stitch, without which the fisherperson could have lost fingers or contacted vibrio or other nasty infection.

It’s ~$16/lb estimated wahoo steak.

Which would you rather have?

glad you made it in safe.

Should be a note to everyone to carry a real first aid kit when you go out…

and don’t forget to restock yours.

I had a guy get a circle hook in his bicept 2 weeks ago… he was a bleeder. and then last week my brother put the gaff in his knee while wresling a dolphin. The cooler was full and we had not moved a couple to make room. Hit a double and the first one in the box decided to wiggle when the second was coming in the box.

bottom line… he was a bleeder also and if I had not resupplied my first aid kit I would not have had the right stuff to dissenfect and properly bandage.

Again glad your mate is fine.

Yes, a properly stocked first aid kit is important. We had 1 guaze pad, 1/4 rool of tape and 2 aspirin. That has been taken care of. It is one of those things you forget about till you need it.
