Had a three hour window to get out on Saturday and my son and I hit the water. Started with top-water and had plenty of blow ups, but no hook ups. I could tell the fish while somewhat interested were not really giving their best effort. We switched over to suspending baits and first cast was rewarded with a solid thump. I could tell it was a large fish and really thought I had a nice redfish, until we got her boat side and saw a trout in the 22" range. We netted her and I wanted to get a good picture with my son and the fish. The rear set of trebles was hung a little and as I was removing the hook from the net the fish slipped and shook her hear driving the rear hooks solidly into my thumb right beside the nail. She put a Roland Martin hook set on me and gave it another couple of shakes for good measure before I could get my hand back on her. My son and I tried to get the hook out, but because of the angle on my thumb I had no real way to apply downward pressure to release the barb. Ended up at the Dr. and he said the reason I could not get it out was due to the barb hanging on my nail underneath the skin.
My son learned a valuable lesson that day. In my haste to get a picture and get her back in the water as quickly as possible I got a little careless and paid the price. Worst part of it was we had just figured out the bite and had to leave and did not get a picture for him. I guess we will just have to go out this coming weekend and get another big one.
Happened to me with a 7lb bass at night as a teenager. Not fun or cheap. My friend and I still laugh about that day. Even though the day was short I’m sure your son and you will be telling that story for decades.
OUCH! Sorry that happened Andy. Those trebles are nasty. As for the topwater, I have had blow-ups, still never landed one. Hope your thumb heals quickly.

Ouch! Great trout, but sorry about the outcome. Hope it heals up quickly

I got one pulling a plug from a tackle box and it snagged the side. Didn’t even get to cast a line that day.
I had a crazy incident a couple of weeks back on the IOP pier. We were catching Rays in the 36"-42" range. With the fish not cooperating, some of the younger guys, who hadn’t brought any tackle, wanted to catch these “massive” (to them) Rays. I had just beached one, and after one of the guys got some pics, with his family admiring his catch, released it, and I made my way back to the end of the pier. When I got there one of the kids had another, smaller, Ray, up to the top of the water. As I brought it up on the pier railing to unhook it, the rod beside me started screaming. When I diverted my attention away from the smaller Ray to tighten the drag on the other rod, the Ray flipped off of the railing. Initially I thought that the second hook on my rig had buried in my hand. Uh, not so fast. The Ray had somehow managed to flip it’s tail around and bury the barb in my hand. The barb went in near my lower wrist, and all but came out on the top side of my hand between my pinky, and ring finger. Not wanting the barb to break off in my hand, I immediately grasped the tail and barb, and pulled the barb back out. It was nearly as large as a no. 2 pencil, and was like pulling a sawz-all blade out backwards. I went ahead and beached the other Ray, and released it. Never having had this happen I wasn’t sure what to do, so I asked KoolSeas to get online, and find out. I thought that I was going to have to cut my wedding band off, as it was disappearing in the fold of the swelling. After a couple of ibuprofens, and soaking my hand in hot water, as hot as I could stand it, for an hour or so, I ventured back out to the pier thinking that those young fellows were going to remember this for quite some time, and me too, for that matter!!

Sorry, didn’t wait around for the pose with a Stingray hanging from my hand. If I had, I can assure you that I would have held it out at arms length though, you know, to make it appear bigger. Bled like crazy. Just dug out a piece of the barb a few days back. I can send you a pic of the scars, if you’re interested?

Nah, I’m alright… Glad you are too. I sliced my finger on an oyster shell in November and just got the last piece out a month ago. That was a relief.
Do you want to let this go? I don’t care either way…Punk!

Hey buddy! The last thing you want to do is get “sarcastic” on this one! I was THERE and it scared the living ****ZA out of me! Went completely through his hand (much like your smarta$$ “Oyster cut”). I begged him to go the the ER! How dare you make fun of something so serious! When this type thing happens TO YOU??? Maybe you will be more humble! Here…I took these just now, sorry we don’t have the “exact moment” pics, as my hands were shaking along with my entire BODY!..ARG!
