Took Friday off from work for a long weekend. Left Wapoo Cut about 5:30 and had a nice comfortable ride out to some live bottom in about 75’ the two of us had our 5 fish/per limit of nice sea bass by 8:30 then we headed to 100’+ to do some trolling. Nice day but the strikes were few and far between, put 3 small slingers in the box, then we ran to the Comanche reef. We missed a nice (might have been a legit gaffer) dolphin there, put another slinger in the box. Then the flat line about 30’ off the transom gets hit, and up pops a little sailfish. Had a nice fight, several jumps and a little tail-walking, get the fish to the boat reached down and barely had to touch the hook to get it out. Sail hit a smal ballyhoo behind a big ugly orange, green, and blue skirt (this skirt gets hit all the time but I can’t believe a sail would hit it).
We had a nice 16-18lb King sky on one of our baits, released him. and we put one more little slinger in the box. Not a whole lot of fish in the box but quite a memorable day. First Sail for my boat!
Sail measured 50" from tip of bottom jaw to fork, I est. around 30lbs (does that sound about right for the length?).
