Late report from saturday

Went out bottom fishing on the Sea Squaw. I ended up keeping three vermillion snapper. Capt. Wolfe got a lobster, a 17 pound gag,and an 11 poundhogfish My man Ken Got a hogfish, and some lobster. But the high of our trip was my man Daniel with his 47 pound cubera snapper. Should have pics later.

isnt that cu-bara snapper too big causing it to be poisonous and no good to eat??

i want to know were you herd that

its pretty well known that once cu-bera snappers get big they become poisonous. a buddy caught the state record last year and it was inedible, he donated it to dnr for an autopsea.

and - i am being deadly serious about what i am telling you. googlr it and you’ll see

Cubera are the king of all snapper. Cubera snapper are the largest of the snapper family. They closely resemble the mangrove snapper in appearance and it’s difficult to tell the species apart except for the sheer size of cubera. Cuberas bite during the day or the night, although night fishing for them around shipwrecks is probably the best way to target them. Believe it or not, but lobster is the best known bait to use for catching cubera snapper. It is rare that we have live lobster to use as bait however, so we usually catch them on big chunks of cut bait or on live baits. Cubera snapper have huge dog-like teeth and are a very strong predator fish. I’ve caught them from 40-60 pounds out of Fort Lauderdale, so they get bigger than any of our other snappers. I will give you a warning about cubera snapper. They have a chance at getting a toxin called ciguatera poison in them and if they have that, they are poisonous. I do not recommend taking the chance of eating one, it’s just not worth the risk.

Don't large grouper(and others)have a chance of having it also? There is a test kit I saw somewhere.

not sure about grouper. i’ll be damned if i would eat any of that fish though

in the bahamas they feed a piece to their cat. if hes all right after a few hours its on the grill that night. That disease is very fast acting. A captain buddy of mine had it and was extremely sick for 5 months…
He got it from a mangrove snapper, untested

That’ll make you think twice about ordering the grouper.

You gonna talk or FISH!

Alright that’s scary…

If the fish won’t bite, strap on a tank go down and make em!

Bubba can we go Fishing?? Can I drive the boat

any predatory fish living in or around coral reefs has a chance of carrying ciguatera toxins, however ciguatera poisoning is virtually unheard of this far north. it typically occurs at more tropical lattitudes. if you are still woried about it buy a test kit or put a piece of fish on an ant hill. if they eat it, you can too. if you are still worried about it, call me, I will gladly take it off your hands.

Kill em’ and Grill em’

Colin

ants will eat the rotting meat off of a deer skull too… that dont mean i want to eat it

Any fish could have it yes, but isn’t it an accumulated poision? IE bigger fish MORE poision therefore more dangerous. It’s kind of like a fat soluble vitamin vs. a water one. Too much Water soluable no biggie b/c you’ll pass it but fat soluble can kill you b/c your body stores it up and poisions itself.

Ciguatera or not, the meat from big cuberas isn’t as good as the smaller specimens. Different color, stringy and touger IMO. And good luck finding a test kit. Seriously.

Nice catch BTW.

No im not Bruce. But im his girlfriends son.
