went back to venice to fish with captain rimmer covington. Did an overnighter. left late first morning due to storms, started the 130 mile trip around noon. Stopper about 70 miles out to catch bait, filled up the live wells with hard tails and we were off to do some deep dropping until sun down. Ended up catching a couple groupers, barrel fish, and sharks. Drove anothe ten miles out to start out first sword drift, had several shark bites then finally got the right bite around 12 45. By 1 am we had a 75 lb swordie in the boat. Fished the rest of the night with only several other shark bites on our sword lines. The highlights of the night were catching a 6inch sailfish by hand and a pair of nice phins that were cruzing through the light. The bull was about 45 and the cow about 20.
At sun up we headed another 30 miles to the tuna grounds. As we got close there were acres of yfts skying every where. Caught 12 50-75 pounders in two hours and headed to the hill. Stopped on several pallets and logs on the way in caught some grown triple tails.
great trip over all. Captain rimmer and his crew are amazing. Everybody needs to experience this trip. will post pictures soon.
I thought Rimmer was in Pass Christian?
Where did he put you up?
Were you in the 39 See Vee?
What is he charging right now?
Is Kevin Beach still down there and do you kno what he is running?
PM me if you want… thanks
Polly Wanna…
“acres of yfts” - that’s something you don’t see up here too much. I was down there this past jan and we saw acres of black fins, yfts and sharks - an awesome sight! Lookin forward to the lump in January.
Cracker,
Beach is still there. We went down for our annual fill the freezer with YFT a couple of weeks ago. We have been fishing with Mike Ellis “Relentless Sportfishing” on his 33 foot Freeman made right here in SC the last couple of trips. Those are outstanding boats! When we go we always seem to do better than everyone else. Mike is hard core and works hard to put fish in the box (so does Kevin, we have fished with him before too). We caught 9 average 60 pounders the first day when everyone else was coming in with one or two fish and put four 80 to 100 pounders in the box the second day and lost one estimated over 130 five seconds from being gaffed all before 11:00. Storms ran us off that rig and we decided to go get our quick limit of snappers and head in early since we had plenty of meat. If you want a good pull and want to stock the freezer then it is worth the long trip down there.

Dang Peyton !!! Nice job down there.
Nick says that maybe yaw’ll need some bigger rods or something.

Kevin Beach just bought a Freeman33. He will be taking delivery in January.
Someone was talking about the arrogant NC fishermen. Go to LA. The best saltwater fishing on the planet without the tude. I wish I was there right freakin now.
The fishing is unreal. When the speckled trout are running, the catch them by the hundreds… literally. The redfish are strong to.
In the winter they catch plenty of wahoo and big YFT’s on the lump. The summer is crazy with the Genuine snappers. You can catch a limit in less than 30 minutes guaranteed.
The YFT’s in the summer are pretty much off the hook. 50-80lb fish are the norm with some over 100lbs being caught. Along with a few blue marlin, whites, and sails thrown in.
The charters arent cheap. $1300 plus fuel is average for a day trip with the boats that can carry 6 passengers. But you will come back with quality fish.
You guys are gonna catch it around here for taking that sail out of the water…

We have been kicking around the idea of going for a few years now. I would like to take our 31 contender. When is the BEST time to go for YFT? Sounds like they are good just about anytime but when are they the best closest to shore. These guys live baiting or trolling ballyhoo or what?
Sounds like a great trip!
If you can’t fix it with a hammer, you’ve got an electrical problem.

Ballyhoo… never, well rarely. Live bait only. Pretty much like live baiting for kings, but with flouro and circle hooks. The best time to go is July-October for quantity of Tuna. Most of the monster tuna come in the winter. Weather in the winter is very unpredictable though.
IF I WERE YOU… charter a reputable guide first. The tuna arent at every rig. They move around and the guides communicate among themselves as to where the fish are. I have seen quite a few guys drag their boats down only to get dissapointed.
In the long run it may cost a little more to ch
Does anybody know if Aaron Pierce is still running charters down there out of Fourchon (sorry, know this is a Venice thread)? He used to be partners with Ed Frekey in Tuna Time charters, but he isn’t on the website any more.
the tuna fishing right now is really good in the Gulf. They have been goin gout to the floating rigs and killing the tuna and nice size tuna. The nice thing about Venice is you do not have to go far to get in deep water.
From reds to marlin you got it.
