Despite the heat we were able to pick up three about the same size as the sun set. No complaints but it seems to me that I am seeing less and less bait balls as I look around. I know there’s bait in the lake but wonder if lack of any weeds is hurting the reproduction levels of bait. Lord knows I put enough live ones back into the lake some days.
It seems like there are a lot less fish in the big pool for this time of year. Makes me wonder if they are still up lake. I know 4 weeks ago there were still a lot of fish up in the rivers. By mid June there are usually easy to find schools of decent fish on the big points below spence. Herring are open water fish, like the striper. Weeds should have no effect. I have seen a lot more in my lights this year than I did all of last year. The year before that was the most I’ve seen since I moved here in 05

Was on the water with the wifey on Tuesday and looked around while riding around. Found a few bait balls in Balentine Cove - no fish were with the bait though. Came back through the tower area on the way back to Jake’s just looking and nothing bait wise. Was about 6-6:30 pm. Saw some scattered but no schools.???

Young 66,
You are right about the heat last night!! While loading the boat, my head was pounding from the heat. My neighbor and I rode around from 5:30 to 7:00 to cool off and look for fish. Did not mark anything but trees in the main channel/points between Bomb and Spence.
Headed to the mouth of John’s where I knew there were dome fish in 50 feet. Caught our limit of shorts by 8:30 and headed home under a beautiful sky and a nice breeze!! Largest fish was 20.5", most were 18 to 19".

Glad to hear that some think there is more bait then past years. Fishing once a week and never on a weekend over the last ten years I’ve seen L M Bass fishing go from a 10 to a 2. Seems like I’m seeing a lot less schooling of small stripers. I mean when they cover a area the size of a football field. The upside is that the average size of fish caught this year is around 22-23 inches. Great fun but neither my bait or I am that smart. I hope the lack of smaller fish is just good luck and not a sign of something else. They need to close fishing in July and August - the heat is getting to be too much for me as well as the fish.
I put in at the dam this morning and there was so much bait around the landing that you could’ve walked on it. I marked bait from the surface down to 10’ solid. You could see it everywhere on the surface. I didn’t go look but was told that it is almost as thick at the towers.

Time to bring out the lights. Too hot for the day, try 11 pm instead. I should be out there tonight or tomorrow night. Maybe both.

Think I will try some trolling tonight for a few hours. Should be getting to be about that time.
